DERBYSHIRE - AFTERMATH OF THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR - PAPERS OF THE HIGH SHERIFF RELATING TO THE COLLECTION & DISTRIBUTION OF THE COUNTY's "POLE-MONEY" TO HELP DISBAND THE CROMWELLIAN ARMIES; Fine Sept.-Dec. 1660 archive of receipts, documents and letters (no address wrappers) retained by John Mundy of Markeaton, during the complex process of gathering funds (several £1,000's in all) from the land-owners of Derbyshire, under the aegis of the London-based "Committee for Disbanding the Army", straight after the Restoration of King Charles II in June 1660. There are several of Mundy''s retained copy-letters on the subject inc. two separately signed by him and "Tho. Gresley" + "John Harpur", a rare Oct. 1660 partly printed receipt for "£348-10s-09d" received from Mundy (and signed) by "John Lawson" being part of Derbyshire's "part of the moneys arising by the Act entituled An Act for the speedy provision of money for disbanding and paying off the forces of this Kingdom both by Land and Sea" in the name of Sir Richard Brown, and several other lists of sums collected, and giving the towns and villages from where those contributions came. A rare insight into the first task of the restored King, all in excellent condition. [Plus type-scripts of 27 1660-1 letters that originally formed part of this archive.] (15 documents). I imagine I ought to have the benefit of my Royal Highness's first proclamation and nothing prevented me from formally delivering myself up". SUFFOLK - THE START OF GAS-LIGHT FOR BURY/WOODBRIDGE/STOWMARKET - THE INSTALLER's OWN DESCRIPTIVE LETTERS TO HIS WIFE; 1834/6 long EL's (4) written by "J.J. Peckston" who was responsible for installing the first gas supplies in these country towns, amidst great public excitement and confusion; with various postal marks. The beautifully written long letters include; (Bury, 1834) "...a Watchmaker...found out there was gas in his pipes and lighted his Shop and several others...I of course had the lights put out" [the suplies were not yet fully operational!] and (Stowmarket, 1836) "Now that the inhabitants...find I am nearly ready to give light, they are fit to tear the fitter to pieces to have their fittings done...."!! Rare insight into the spread of public gas supplies (and especially lighting) to country areas. (4 letters + 1 print). |
