MILITARY - AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE - NEWS OF THE LITTLE-KNOWN NICARAGUAN CAMPAIGN; Rare 23rd June 1780 EL from "Kingston" to Edinburgh with fine scarce curly-tailed "J" "JAMAICA" mark (light fold) on the lower flap and v. fine London "In all" mark on the front, sent by Packet and charged 1-6d total. The contents give rare news of a southern Campaign in the War of Independence that is very little-known, relating to the conflict in Nicaragua between the British and American-allied forces:- "We have lately taken the Castle of St. Juan, which commands the River that leads into the Lake of Nicaragua. It is expected that our troops will get possession of the Cities of Granada & Leon, situated on the Lake; but our force, I'm afraid, is too inconsiderable to secure any lasting settlement. The attempt perhaps may attract the attention of the Spaniards, who are particularly jealous in guarding against encroachments into South America....If we could once turn the course of the war from being merely defencive on our side, we shall yet do well." This campaign occurred during the year of "American Disasters", when the British forces were gaining the upper hand in the southern states and elsewhere. Important historical contents. This is not only a colourful and rare P.H. item; the contents include important and very early historical references to the cause of the Indian Mutiny. An officer's wife writes:- "...A new Cartridge Paper of a different colour has been given to the Sepoys, who imagine [cow] grease has been employed in its preparation, & that this is a prelude to Govt. destroying their caste & converting them to Christianity. The Brigadier & Brigade Major sent at 10pm to Major Matthews; disaffection seems to be the cause....the Sepoys' conscience troubling them, they fear an English Regt. will be set upon them..." This was the precise cause of the Mutiny which broke out in May, and here it is voiced as early as February! Doubly important Exhibition item. PHOTO
