FAILED SAILOR's CONCESSION RATE COVER TO THE "PACIFIC STATION" WITH RARE LONDON BOXED "CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS ‡oz" MARK; Attractive 30th Dec. 1893 env. (minor toning) addressed "To John J. Carlisle, Secretary's Valet, H.M.S. Royal Arthur, Pacific Station" franked by a pair of 1d lilacs (perhaps the sender was aware that the letter was over weight and thought that one could send twice as much for double the 1d Concession Rate) tied by an unclear Irish duplex with a very fine "BROOKEBOROUGH" c.d.s. on the back. If the letter had weighed below ‡ an ounce it would have been sent for 1d, but it was overweight; so it went no further than London and has a very fine rare red boxed "CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS ‡ oz" mark, matching the "LONDON" c.d.s. alongside on the front.
