RARE CROMWELLIAN PERIOD "Post Pd 6d" POSTAL RATE ON COVER FROM LONDON (?) TO CHESTERFIELD; "20th Jan. 1651" (i.e. possibly 1652) EL (stains and faults affecting contents, address and postal rate) from "Hen Davison" (on behalf of "My Lord" who is thought to have been the Marquis of Dorchester, Henry Pierpoint, whose mother was a Talbot of the Earl of Shrewsbury's family - see following lots), presumably from London (where Dorchester was known to be at this time; see D.N.B.) because of the postal rate. The letter is addressed; "For his worthy Friend Mr. George Taylor at his Howse [at?] Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Chesterfield." and is endorsed "Post pd. 6d" at lower left. This 6d rate was for letters sent above 140 miles at this date, which fits with the London to Chesterfield routing. Very early indeed for an internal English postal rate; we believe there is only one earlier London to Derbyshire postal rated cover in private hands. Rare in any condition. PHOTO - see plate no. |

RARE CROMWELLIAN PERIOD "Post Pd" ENDORSEMENT ON COVER FROM LONDON (?) TO CHESTERFIELD; Fine "May 4the 1652" EL from the same correspondence as the previous lot, written by "Wm. Colgrave" (on behalf of "My Lord" ref. milord's brother "Mr. George Pierrpoint" - one of the Marquis of Dorchester's younger brothers), addressed "For his honored Friend Mr. Geo. Taylor in Chesterfield Derbyshire", and endorsed "Post Pd." at lower left. It is almost certain that this letter was sent from London (where Dorchester was art this date; see D.N.B.), and the "Post Pd." endorsement suggests that the letter was sent by post (at the 6d rate for 140+ miles). Rare companion to the previous lot and one of only a handful of pre-1660 postal items connected with Derbyshire. PHOTO - see plate no. |
