"LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. on the flap; between the stamps is a very fine large red "12" [cents] arrival charge (2c landing fee, plus 10c for the 300+ miles from Boston to N. York). U.S.A. - RARE INCORRECT 10d EMBOSSED SINGLE FRANKING ON TRANSATLANTIC COVER; Unusual 1st July 1853 EL (toned and weak at right) from London (Insurance Agent's cachet at top left of address) to New York, oddly only franked by a cut-to-shape 10d brown (tied by a London numeral) instead of the correct 1/- green, and so treated as wholly unpaid from Liverpool onwards. There is a very fine Liverpool octagon d.s. on the front beside the stamp, matching a very fine "19/CENTS" Accountancy mark, and the letter was charged as fully unpaid (as per regulations at the time) on arrival in the U.S. with a v. fine "24" charge-mark. EXHIBITIONS - WILLIAM MULREADY SIGNED AUTOGRAPH REQUEST TO HENRY COLE TO ALLOW FRIENDS TO "SEE THE INTERIOR OF YOUR [CRYSTAL] PALACE"; Remarkable and fine 11th April 1850 letter (diminutive as usual) written and signed by the designer of the Mulready Postal Stationery, "W. Mulready"; addressed to one of the senior promoters of the newly built Crystal Palace Exhibition Hall, Henry Cole (Rowland Hill's assistant during the Postal Reforms of 1839/40). He writes to ask if Cole can let two of Mulready's friends who were passing through London see the "Palace"!
