PALAPYE STATION PROVISIONAL: 1899 (22 Nov.) Cape Government Railways printed envelope addressed to Palapye Station bearing the right hand half of a vertically bisected 4d (SG.35a) tied by Palapye Station d.s. and with m/s initials ("AH") & "Postmaster" below. The cover is repaired at top right where a small piece bearing the adhesive and the manuscript writing has been excised and subsequently reaffixed to the rest of the cover. The lot is accompanied by a photocopy of a similar cover contained in the Queen's collection which could well bear the other half of the bisect, along with a pencil note stating that "There are five known examples of the 22 Nov. bisects (note: one realised almost £3,000 in Christie's November 1996 sale), 2 left & 3 right half. No attempt has ever been made to pair them off". A very rare item.PHOTO
