G.B. USED IN GIBRALTAR REGISTERED COVER AT 3s-6d RATE WITH LONDON "(Crown)/REGISTERED" MARKS STRUCK IN BOTH RED & BLACK; Colourful 20th March 1862 E to Marseille "Via England" endorsed "Registered" in red manuscript at top left, franked by G.B. 6d lilac (cut wing margin) and Strip of Three 1/- green (with wing margin) beautifully tied by very fine "A26" numerals with fair black "GIBRALTAR/A" c.d.s. alongside; there are also very fine red and fine black London "(Crown)/REGISTERED" marks on the front with fair "PD" mark, a very fine French "CHARGÉ" mark and a fine red oval "REGISTERED/LONDON" oval d.s. It had been suggested that the black "(Crown)/REGISTERED" mark was a newly discovered unrecorded Gibraltar marking, but (after comparison of careful tracings of the two marks) we are of the opinion that it is the London mark struck - most unusually - in the wrong colour. SAILOR's 1d CONCESSION RATE COVER TO G.B. WITH STITCH-MARKS FOR THE ATTACHED 1d COIN & WITH SUPERB PRINTED HEADING OF "H.M.S. Malabar, Malta" and endorsed "pp" at lower right (in the centre of a circle of small needle-holes where a 1d coin had been sown to pay the letter's postage on arrival in England); there is a fine red London "PAID" c.d.s. on the front and c.d.s.'s of Liskeard & Plymouth front & back. It is rare to find evidence for 1d coins being sent along with Concession Rate mail. The contents of the letter (from a son to his father) are equally exceptional; they are headed by a superb printed engraving of "H.M.S. Indus Entering Malta Harbour"; the seaman obviously spent some of the 11d he saved by using the Concession Rate to pay for a luxury sheet of paper! Superb Exhibition item.
