THE CRIMEAN WAR - P.O. GREEN WRAPPER RECEIPT SIGNED BY "FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE" HERSELF; Jan. 1855 receipt half of the Registered Letter "Green Wrapper" (minor faults) that accompanied a registered letter sent from England to "the Postmaster of [Scutari]...directed to [Miss Nightingale, The Hospital, Scutari]", filled out in manuscript by the Lady of the Lamp and signed "Florence Nightingale" at the foot. Beside this signature are London datestamps of 15th & 27th Jan. 1855 showing that the registered letter in question left London for the Crimea on 15th Jan. and that this receipt was returned to London on 27th Jan. 1855. THE CRIMEAN WAR - THE LARGEST RECORDED FRANKING OF BRITISH STAMPS USED FROM THE CAMPAIGN; Extraordinary c.1855 large part wrapper (presumably originally wrapped round a bundle of papers - hence the wax seals at the foot of the address - area at left restored) addressed to Ireland, endorsed "Registered letter from an officer of the British Army Serving in the Esat" along the top, spectacularly franked by 42 1d Red "stars" (1855 Die I SC perf. 14 - two being almost lost, with 20% & 40% remaining - including several strips and an attractive Block of Nine) almost all tied by fine to very fine strikes of the British Army Post Office in the Crimea "0*0" barred ovals. The 3s6d franking represents the 6d reg. fee plus 12 times the 3d ºoz rate of 3d via Marseilles, indicating a 3-ounce package. This amazing franking is believed to be the largest recorded franking recorded from the Crimean War. Highly Important Exhibition Centre-piece for any Crimea or G.B. Used Abroad Collection. MASSIVE MULTICOLOUR FRANKING ON SUPERB EARLY REGISTERED QUADRUPLE RATE COVER FROM OLLMÐTZ TO CARDINAL WISEMAN IN LONDON; Spectacular 13th Dec. 1852 Entire addressed to London with large red wax seal on reverse, franked (back and front) by 1850 6kr brown (horizontal strip of eight - almost clear margins all round - and almost 4-margin marginal single), 9kr blue (horizontal strip of three - end stamp almost separated - with two singles; all with close to giant margins all round) and 3kr red (2 singles; 4 margins all round) all tied by mostly fine "Ollm¸tz/13 DEC." datestamps with matching "RECOM" on the front along with very fine red Aachen (?) "(Crown)/REGISTERED" and "P" in circle, plus red London "PAID" arrival c.d.s. of 17th Dec. 1852. The manuscript annotations of the Ollm¸tz P.O. show that this remarkable letter weighed "15/10 U[nze]", unze being the rarely used Vienna ounce weight; this equates to 52.5 grams, the correct weight for a quadruple rate letter (i.e. over 3 & up to 4 zollloth = 50 to 66.66 grams). The franking totals 105kr which is four times the 21kr rate plus the single 21kr registration fee. It was normal Austrian P.O. practice to put the stamps for the registration fee on the back of a letter; in this case a few extra stamps also had to be placed on the back, because of the rather sprawling wording of the address. One of the most admired covers in the whole Vivien Sussex Collection. This cover was donated by the Church to a charity auction many years ago and has never appeared in a major philatelic auction before. Highly Important Austrian Classic Franking - thought to be a Unique Franking and undoubtedly a Major Exhibition Centre-piece by any standards. [With Oct. 2001 B.P.A. EXTRAORDINARY REGISTERED CROWNED CIRCLE COVER TO G.B. DURING THE "BLOCKADE-RUNNER" PERIOD; 16th Dec. 1864 long envelope (10‡x4‡ ins.; overall speckling due to cloth lining and with vertical folds well clear of marks) addressed to one "James Williams" care of a London business address; endorsed "7‡ [Oz] 13/9" beside a very fine rare red "REGISTERED/B/NASSAU" c.d.s. beside a mostly very fine orange-red "(Crown)/PAID/AT/BAHAMAS" Crowned Circle, with very fine (oily) red "(Crown)/REGISTERED" (of London?) and a partial 7th (?) Jan. 1865 London arrival d.s. all on the front. The rate (prepaid in cash) appears to be 15 times the ‡ ounce rate of 11d with "1/3" in blue indicating 15 times a 1d accountancy rate. The American Civil War was in full spate at this date, and it seems very likely that this envelope originated in the Southern States of the US, being carried by a "Blockade-running" vessel to neutral Bahamas for posting on to G.B. Unique in a number of ways; the highest Prestamp Bahamas Postage Rate we have recorded, the only Registered Bahamas Crowned Circle cover that we have been able to trace, and possibly the only known Registered Crowned Circle cover from any British Empire Post Office. INTERNAL "MONEY-LETTER" EXCEPTIONALLY MISSENT ACROSS THE ATLANTIC WITH THE UNIQUE (?) OVAL-FRAMED "MISSENT/TO LIVERPOOL/ENGLAND" MARK; 3rd July - 23rd Sept. 1841 Entire addressed to a "D.P. Surveyor, Frampton, Lower Canada" and endorsed "Money letter", with red wax seal of the "SURVEYOR GENERAL/UPPER CANADA" (signed "Joh Davidson" on the front). The letter was prepaid ("4/-") with red manuscript "M" and has a fine red "KINGSTON/UPR CA" c.d.s. (crease) matching the fine red boxed "PAID" (crease), and should have been delivered without problem. However, it was accidentally sent to England by the Post Office and so has a very fine strike of the very rare black oval framed "MISSENT/TO LIVERPOOL/ENGLAND" mark (crease) on the top flap with manuscript "29 July 1841" below. This is the only recorded example of this spectacular marking as far as we are aware; presumably it was struck in the Liverpool Ship Letter Office. The letter was then delayed for some weeks in England (probably being sent to London for examination and investigation) and then sent back to Canada, hence the fine "QUEBEC/LC" c.d.s. (crease) of 23rd Sept. 1841 on the lower flap and the handstruck "MONEY LETTER" mark on the front. A unique Transatlantic Money Letter and a Unique Missent cover. Fabulous Exhibition item. Correspondence) uprated with strip of four 2c "REGISTERED" stamps (all affected by crease - cracked at top - tied by "REGISTERED/CANADA" octagon d.s.) and pair of Small Queen 1c yellow (tied by edge of very fine red London "(Crown)//REGISTERED" mark. All the stamps are also cancelled by small manuscript "X" marks and there is a fair "SARSEN" (?) c.d.s. on the back. Spectacular cover; perhaps the sender had not heard that the 8c reg. rate had recently been reduced to 5c, hence the 3c overpayment. (With Oct. 2001 BPA Certificate). PHOTO - |
