| 1730 | FILE OF ORIGINAL STAMP ARTWORK RELATING TO THE 1954 PICTORIAL DEFINITIVE ISSUED DONATED TO THE APPEAL BY MR. ALLAN B. CRAWFORD, PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION: A six-page file of artwork containing twelve hand-drawn pencil (one being in pencil and ink) essays of the ‡d to 5/- values for the proposed pictorial definitive issue. The drawings are in the main very similar to the designs adopted in the first QEII definitive issue (although they obviously incorporate a rough sketch of King George VI who was still alive at the time). This remarkable collection of drawings is supplemented by a type-written letter by Hugh Elliott (the island's first administrator) dated 7th May 1951) to the Colonial Office informing them that he encloses rough sketches of the twelve proposed designs and a second letter dated 1st January 1952 written by Elliott to Allan Crawford regarding the "temporary Tristan stamps" (SG.1-12, opts.on St.Helena) which were the forerunners of this pictorial set. The background to this file was featured in a Gibbons Stamp Monthly article (July 1997). A unique and highly desirable archive. PHOTO - see plate no. | £1600 | ||||||||||||||||
