Frere" with "3/AV" (Inland Office) & "AU/24" (Foreign Branch) London transit Bishop Marks but posted in March & February!! The letters should simply have travelled direct to Madeira but they were clearly carried beyond that island by error & missent elsewhere (perhaps due to French Naval Blockades?) So they were sent back into England (presumably from the W.Indies to which the Madeira bound vessels of the period usually sailed). They each have "DOVER/SHIP LRE" marks on the front (which were only struck on letters going into Britain) - v.fine (just crossed by crease) and near fine - on the front. Clearly they were both Missent to the West Indies hence there late Oct. & early Nov. arrival dates noted in Madeira! Rare pair. EL (privately carried, no postal marks) from Lisbon to Madeira regarding the writer's problems trying to get to the West Indies (via Madeira or direct). He writes - "Having been a passenger in the fleet which unfortunately was taken on the 9th of August [1780] and carried into Spain, I came hither with a view of getting forward to the West Indies by some neutral ship, or failing that to proceed to Madeira in the hopes of being taken up by the October Pacquet from England. Finding however there is no such thing to be met with at this port as a neutral ship nor any vessel for your island likely to leave this before next month, so as even to secure my passage to Jamaica in the November pacquet, and that in times of exigency [= emergency; this was the period when the Franco-Spanish fleet was blockading the West Indies as their contribution to help the Americans against Great Britain]. Government has lately ordered the Pacquet to proceed direct to the W.Indies without touching your island, I have judged it on the whole most prudent to return to England....At the time of our misfortune we were two days sail of Madeira". He then asks the addressee to forward an enclosed letter to be sent on to Jamaica; presumably to explain his non-arrival. The letter is annotated as having finally reached Madeira on Feb. 21st 1781! Rare insight into the instability caused by the American War and a rare letter from a civilian caught up in a naval battle. | £150 | |||||||||||||

MILITARY - BATTLE OF WATERLOO: WOUNDED BRITISH CAVALRY OFFICER'S LETTER HOME WITH VERY RARE 'SHIP LETTER/(CROWN)/COLCHESTER' D.S.: Remarkable 6th July 1815 EL (trivial faults) from 'Brussels, Flanders' to Great Marlow with a 95%v.fine strike of the rare orange-red 'SHIP[LE]TTER/(CROWN)/ 12 JU 12/ 1815/ COLCHESTER' date-stamp (Rob.S2 : only three believed known in private hands) just over the edge on the front. An important British Maritime item. The contents are, if anything, even more significant than the postal marks, being written & signed by a British Officer who had been wounded at the Battle of Waterloo only a fortnight before. The writer, Edward Kelly [a Captain in the 1st Life Guards]was seriously wounded in this most famous of all British military victories and he writes home to his wife with details of his part in the battle, news of his wounds and his hopes for preferment following his own gallantry. He writes (typed transcript included) "My wound is...likely to prove tedious and painful, and the Chief Medical Officer here has ordered me home...The small bone of my leg is fractured and before the wound, which is very large, can heal, exfoliation of the bone must take place...The Gallant Marquis of Anglesey...sent me word that he had already mentioned my name to the Duke of Wellington and that...he would alsomention me to the Prince [Regent] and to the Duke of York. The men and those officers who fought with me in the Field are enthusiastic in my favour...I offered the French Colonel's epaulettes to Lord Uxbridge, but he said he could not think of depriving my family of them. I got his horse also - a most noble one - but being [then] attacked by a number of French at the same time, was obliged to let him go and should have been killed but for our Corp[ora]l Major who fought bravely by my side till we laid them down never to rise again. I have mentioned him to Lord Harrington....[P.S.]. Many officers have lost all their baggage & horses in the confusion which arose when we first retreated. I have lost nothing but my bed & tent...[there] was a great number of spare wigs on the green." It is recorded that Kelly (born Portarlington, 1771, died India, 1828) was promoted to brevet-major and made a Knight St. Anne of Russia for his bravery at Waterloo. The colonel he killed was in the 1st Regiment of the French Cuirassiers. One of the very few Waterloo letters still remaining in private hands. An important and historic Napoleonic Wars Exhibition centre-piece. PHOTO - see plate no. 2 | £3000 | ||||||||||||
MILITARY - INDIAN MUTINY TELEGRAM TO COL. NAPIER AT CAWNPORE: Original 1857 (30 Dec.) m/s Telegram (no env.) forwarded locally from Cawnpore E.I. Office to Colonel Napier with a 47 word message from "Sec. to the Government of India Military Dept." in Calcutta acknowledging the safe receipt of recent despatches from Cawnpore. It is rare to find a contemporary Telegram message from a Military campaign as early as this; the Indian Mutiny was still in full swing at this time - a large rebel force had been defeated outside Cawnpore on Dec. 6th 1857. | £100 | ||||||||||||

MILITARY - SIEGE OF PARIS "BALLON MONTE" THAT HAD BEEN INTENDED TO BE SMUGGLED BY THE AMERICAN DIPLOMATIC BAG: Unusual 27 Dec. 1870 env. (minor wear at top) to GB (Margate, 7th Jan. arrival c.d.s.) from Paris franked by 30c brown tied by partial scarce RED c.d.s. of "PARIS/SC" (P.O. special window, Secteur Central?) of 3rd Jan. 1870 which indicates that this letter was carried by "Le Newton" balloon, being forwarded early with other SC special priority mail. This env. is NOT endorsed "Par Ballon Monte" and the contents show that the writer thought it would leave Paris by other means "I am favoured with another opportunity of sending a letter to England and hasten to take advantage of it by sending you a few lines.... this siege is a great blow to us....my friend is waiting for to take this but I shall have another chance next week and will write to you again". It seems that the friend had planned to get the letter into the American Diplomatic Bag but it is known that even this service had problems early in Jan. 1871, so the friend (or an American Embassy employee?) must have done the next best thing & sent it to the P.O.'s special window for priority service. Rare example of the RED cancel on a flown cover (with research notes). PHOTO - see plate no. 2 | £200 | ||||||||||||
Matching "PAR BALLON MONTE" cover from the same correspondence dated 5th Oct. 1870 (with Margate arrival c.d.s. of 19th Oct. - so not attributable to a specific balloon) with 30c brown tied by "3" dotted star cancel with fine matching "PARIS/PL DE LA MADELEINE" c.d.s. alongside. Interesting contents "...another balloon will leave with letters tomorrow morning & if so I think I have a good chance of getting this off by it. I trust you got my former letter in safety. I sent you a few words yesterday by what I considered to be a safe channel. Oh how I wish that I could get a word from you through the same medium but fear there is little chance of that...you might try it, only say nothing about the war and make your letter as concise and light as possible..." (meaning mail sent by the American Diplomatic Bag?? - see previous lot). There is a p.s. "This is longer than I intended and if opened may not reach you on that account". A good insight into problems of communication during the siege. Plus a local Paris env. of 6 Feb. 1870 (sent sealed). (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. 2 | £100 | ||||||||||||
