| 395 | THE SIEGE OF GIBRALTAR DURING THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE - ORIGINAL OFFICIAL JOURNAL PAGES LISTING SMUGGLED MAIL PACKETS VIA MOROCCO: Two original folio pages (discoloured but sound) from John Raleigh's official Gibraltar Journal dated 21st-28th Nov. 1779 listing letters sent from Faro (on the Algarve) on c24th September and received by a smuggler's boat "from Barbary" (Morocco) with the contributions charged to their addresses totalling "£196-2s-0d" of which £50 went to the smuggler himself (one Patron Cepolino). Fascinating insight into this famous siege which resulted from Franco-Spanish action against Britain in support of the Americans in their War of Independence. With a note that these two pages were salvaged from the original dilapidated Journal that was damaged by "flood water in the basements of the Colonial Secretary's Office in Gibraltar.
