The writer mentions delaying the letter to catch "a coasting Steamer returning to London for repairs" instead of a sailing vessel. Good example of the first 4d - especially a fine pair on cover. 314 BRITISH OCCUPATION PERIOD - RARE POSTAL COVER WITH MENTION OF WAR: 1797 (9 Sept.) EL (minor faults) from Colombo to Madras endorsed "Service" and "Ph. Rosenhagen Military Chaplain" but also with manuscript postal marks above the address; "Paid 8 in Columbo 10th Septr." (sic) and with native endorsement on reverse. Rare example of P.O. mail during the two-year British Occupation before the start of the Crown Colony; few covers are known from this period. The contents include "I wish to God you were to command here. Reinforcements we must have; for the Dutch with 10,000 men could never keep the Natives quiet. We are now engaged in a regular War with them. They are strong in their Country and in their Skill....should a French force join them [they] must be truly formidable". Rare thus. 319 INTERNAL PRE-STAMP COVER FROM CANTON TO WHAMPOA ENDORSED "BY BEEF BOAT": Attractive 1839 (2 Jan.) EL from Canton to "Captn. William Travis, American Ship Thos. Perkins, Whampoa" with the unusual "Beef Boat" endorsement below the address and a spectacular Chinese endorsement (the address?) on the lower flap. The contents refer to ongoing difficulties with the Chinese on the eve of the First Opium War; "The trade is again open for all those vessels that are secured and I have put in their chops for you to be alongside tomorrow morning".
