JAMES GARDINER; 19th/26th July 1745 pair of letters (no address wrappers & some wear) written from "Scarborough" by the reformed "rake" Col. James Gardiner [see also similar 1742 letters under "World P.H. - Military" section at start of this catalogue] to his wife, informing her that "I have received a letter from Sir John Cope wherein he tells me he has orders from the Secretary of State to have ye troops in Scotland ready at an hour's warning, for which reason I intend to set out for Scotland about a fortnight hence..." In the event he was killed fighting bravely after having been deserted by his soldiers at the Battle of Prestonpans a few weeks after these letters were written. Rare historical items.
