There was little need for the P.O. in country areas at this date! Plus 1797 EL mentioning the same pub, and 1809 EL addressed to the same pub, and 3 1902 receipts from/to the "Black Boy Hotel" in Nottingham. Unusual lot. (4 covers + 3 receipts). £120
THE EARLIEST TYPE OF NOTTINGHAM MARK; 3rd Oct. 1713 EL from "Notting." to "Long Melford in Suffolk by way of London" charged "4" and then "In all 7" with v. fine London transit Bishop Mark and almost very fine rare first type "NOTTING/HAM" mark (NG117; 1712-3 only) on the side flap. Attractive and the earliest Nottingham postmark we have seen; very few are known prior to 1750. Exhibition quality. [Ex Martin Willcocks.] PHOTO - see plate no. £120
OTHER EARLY 2-LINE MARKS INC. "NOTING/HAM" ERROR; 1759-62-65 covers with mostly very fine strikes of the small "NOTTING/HAM" (NR122), medium "NOTTING/HAM" (NR132) and error-of-spelling "NOTING/HAM" (NR130) marks; the 1762 cover with 3 very fine strikes (one on each flap & one on front), with amusing contents and illegally franked. Good trio. (3 covers). £100
LATER ERROR OF SPELLING AND PURPLE-INK NAMESTAMPS; c.1765 E (one short flap) with very fine rare "NOTING/HAM" error (NR 130), 1781/4 pair with scarce mostly very fine large & small claret-purple "NOTTING/HAM" marks (NR141 & NR134) and c.1800 EL with near fine rare claret-red "NOTTINGHAM" (NR158). Hand-picked examples of elusive and usually unclear marks. (4 covers). £100
VERY EARLY MISSENT COVER WITH SCARCE FRENCH "P.PAYE/DE/TOURS" MARK; 1787 E to Carlisle with v. fine black "P.PAYE/DE/TOURS" on the front (just clear of small hole), having London Foreign Branch Bishop Mark and 2-ring c.d.s.'s on the back, endorsed "Mifsent to Nottingham" on the front. An inexplicable P.O. error and the earliest Nottingham Instructional Marking of which we are aware. PHOTO - see plate no. £100
DISTINCTIVE PURPLE HORSESHOE "NOTTINGHAM/127" 1st-TYPE MILEAGE MARK; Attractive c.1788 E to Hinckley with a lovely strike of this elusive ( and almost always unclear) mark (NR145) nicely placed on the front. Real Exhibition quality. PHOTO - see plate no 11A £120

Rare pair. (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. £120
"REFUSED" COVER RETURNED FROM/TO JAMAICA WITH ORIGINAL "RETURNED LETTER" WRAPPER; Unusual 1821 EL (demanding repayment of a debt from the addressee!) to a soldier at "Nottingham" via London, posted from "SPANISH-TOWN/JA" (v. fine strike on top flap), redirected and finally charged "3/-" with fair red "Postage to London/Not Paid" in red, but endorsed "Refused" and so with the original "Returned Letter Office" return wrapper charged "3/-" and "4/4"; addressed back to Jamaica from London. One of very few prestamp returned letter wrapper overseas usages to have survived complete with its original letter - especially unusual to the West Indies. (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. £85
RARE "TOO LATE" & OTHER PRESTAMP COVERS; 1821-39 lot inc. v. fine rare June 1839 boxed "TOO LATE" (NR205; printed hosier's Prices Current list), varied mileages, scarce 1835 manuscript local "2" charge (to Upper Brouhton), etc. Plus a fine small coloured 1806 Cary Notts. map. (6 covers + 1 map). £75
"NO CASH ENCLOSED....SUPPOSED MONEY" PRESTAMP COVER STILL CHARGED EXTRA MONEY LETTER RATE; 1833 E (minor creasing) to Barnstaple (Devon) with a very fine "NOTTINGHAM" c.d.s. on the top flap, charged "3/-" and endorsed "No cash enclosed" but also with small "Supposed Money" endorsement at top right. Rare Post Office confusion; it seems likely that the letter was a double letter which was still charged an extra rate for the supposed money content, making the triple 1/- charge. Rare thus. PHOTO - see plate no. £75
RARE "MISSENT TO/NOTTINGHAM" MARKS & "TWICE MISSENT TO" COVER; 1838 EL from Market Street to Manchester redirected to Buxton with mostly very fine "MISSENT TO/NOTTINGHAM" mark (NG203; few known & only 1837-8) on the front, July 1841 1d Red env. from London to Wokingham with mostly fine strike of the same mark but clearly very worn (which would explain its short life and rarity), and unusual 1859 1d Red E (filing folds) from Liverpool to "Mollington" with fine "NOTTINGHAM" c.d.s. on the front endorsed "Not for" and - most exceptionally - "Twice Missent to"!! An unusual shade of ink for this very rare mark of which only a handful remain in private hands. Exhibition item. [This is the first example of this rare mark that we can recall having seen at auction since Cavendish sold a similar cover in their 13th June 1992 auction for £1,430; lot 634.] PHOTO - see plate no. 3 £1000

BRIGHTON - ROYALTY: 1792 E (including part letter) signed by the Duke of Marlborough written by the Duke's son, George Spencer, resident in Grove House, to his sister, the Viscountess Clifden with two-line "BRIGHT/HELMSTONE", overstruck by red double-circular "FREE". Fascinating contents include "about 14, the daughter of Mr. Kemp, who was here last year; he fell violently in love by seeing her from the window as she was walking by" and "he saw her last night on the Steine & as he declares he finds her to be more beautiful than he could ever have conceived, his passion is only increased by his knowing the first object of it by sight, & he is continually at the window, watching every event that takes place in the house of Mr. Kemp who lives in Pavillion Row". Tantalisingly, the identity of the man lusting after young Miss Kemp is a mystery as a page of the letter is missing. Also a Free front signed by Thomas Kemp showing concave "BRIGHTON" (45 x 5mm) and an 1816 Free front signed "York & Albany", endorsed "Brighthelmstone August Sixteenth 1816". (3 items). £100
