| 1494 | THE "FRENCH STAMPING MACHINE" MARK OF LIVERPOOL - THE UNIQUE TRIPLE-ARC BACKSTAMP USAGE; 17th Nov. 1857 E from Liverpool to Dewsbury franked by a 1d Red "stars" tied by a very fine normal "[s/ways]6 14" code "LIVERPOOL/466" Spoon Duplex, but also with a fine strike of the disticntive triple-side-arcs "466" cancellation portion of the Liverpool French Stamping Machine mark in the "stamp position" on the back flap. This is the sole recorded example of this mark without the c.d.s. and as a backstamp; it is dated 5/6 days later than the only cover & pieces (see above for one piece) known with the full cancel. Presumably the Liverpool P.O. undertook other experiments with this early machine as well as regular stamp cancellations. Every bit as rare as the full French Machine mark. Unique?! [Ex Ian Little.] PHOTO - | £400 | ||||||||||||||||
| 1495 | VERY RARE EXPERIMENTAL LIVERPOOL "FRENCH STAMPING MACHINE" SIDEWAYS DUPLEX: 1857 (Nov. 12th) piece bearing 1d "stars" well tied by a very fine strike of the "LIVERPOOL/S/466" experimental sideways duplex produced by the "French Stamping Machine" (the P. O.'s own phrase for this mark at the time) with triple side arcs, used only at Liverpool & Manchester. We know of only 2 other examples of this mark, one of which (albeit on cover) made £1,900+ premium etc. in Cavendish's Sept., 1997 sale. An extremely important machine cancellation rarity. A similar 'by favour' flag-only impression of this mark, in this same shade of ink on an unaddressed 1901 postcard, sold for £2,352 in Cavendish's 13th June 1997 auction (lot 296), and we are only aware of one other similar strike on a plain sheet of paper. Capt. Reynolds, Q[uem] D[eus] C[onservet]" (= Whom God Preserve) routed via the very North Atlantic [due to the French Blockade of normal British routes to the US during the 1740-8 War of the Spanish Succession] and so landed - most exceptionally - at the eastern English port of Scarborough, with a fine "SCAR/BOROUGH" on the flap overstruck by a fine "17/IV" London arrival Bishop Mark. The "5" postal charge proves that the letter was treated as a Ship Letter (4d inland + 1d fee for the ship's Captain). This is one of only two Scarborough Ship Letters to have been recorded (the other has the oval crown mark of 1808 - see Tabeart p.269). An important Maritime cover made all the more interesting by the contents which include; "I suppose you have heard of the dreadfull Fire we had in this Town the 18th of Novem. last, in which allmost half of the Town was consumed & the damage has been computed to mount to £250,000 sterling..." The contents inc. "Heare is noe other Talke but of Warr and Warlike preparations, souldiers shipping daily, and as likely men as I ever saw with my eyes, and as well clad. The King goes for Holland the middle next month." | 1518 | FRANKED CAMPAIGN LETTERS FROM THE BRITISH ARMY IN GHENT DURING THE WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION; Fine and rare pair of Dec. 1742 EL's (consecutive letters from the same correspondence) written and signed by the famous Scottish soldier, Colonel James Gardiner (see D.N.B. - article enclosed about his dissolute and pious dual lives!), with the British forces in "Ghent" en route to join King George II campaigning on the lower Rhine, 3 years before Gardiner returned to Scotland to meet a "glorious" death at the Battle of Prestonpans in the 1745 Rebellion (see matching lot in Scottish P.H. section). The letters to his wife in Edinburgh were carried by private means to London and posted there (with Bishop Marks) endorsed "Free Rd. Douglas" and "Free Jas. Stuart" - the former was a Colonel in the Army (probably in Ghent at the time he franked the letter) as revealed by a P.S. in the following letter. The contents inc. (c.6th Dec.) "...I have wrote many a letter but I don't know if they come to your hands...we have no paquets [= Packet Ships] on this side to carry over the letters yt [= that] goes from hence..." and (11th Dec.) "...our march into Germany...Sir John Whitefoord, Capt. Dalrymple, Capt. Towyn and all our Officers are in good health....[P.S.]..my last letter...will be franked by Col. Douglas."
