1462 CAPE OF GOOD HOPE - UNIQUE COVER?: Exceptional 22nd Dec., 1858 env. (side flap with closed tears opened out for display) from Cape Town (fine red c.d.s. on side flap) addressed to a Major General, "Poste restante/Florence" (black Genoa and Florence c.d.s.'s on reverse) and sent via G.B. (partial "CAPE PACKET/DEVONPORT" and fine red London c.d.s.'s, also on back) franked by a G.B. 6d lilac (SG.70; faults in one corner) tied by m/s cancellation and clearly accepted as valid for postage in place of normal C.G.H. 6d lilac. There is an endorsement "4601. P. S[anta] Ma[ria] Novella" on the front and m/s "20" and "24" charges for Italian postage. This is the only example which we have recorded of a G.B. stamp being accepted for postage in the Cape during the classic period, is an important exhibition item for both G.B. & Cape specialists and is supported by B.P.A. certificate (1997).
