| 1189 | PERFORATION SAMPLES - PROBABLY SENT TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA WITH THE 1867 PERFORATION MACHINE: Plate 89, the upper and lower row with full inscriptions bisected horizontally and mounted on a piece of paper showing ghostly impressions of the S. Australia 4d on each side, suggesting that this item was sent to S. Australia during the production of this issue. The following m/s note is written between the strips "These borders are cut off one of the sheets of spoilt stamps, and is sent, to show the mark + which is printed on the english sheets; the intersecting point of which lines is fitted into a pin in the perforating machine at Somerset House, to secure accuracy of position - a boy does this quickly whilst the machine is working". Fine and most unusual. At this time the Perkins Bacon plates for S. Australia were being used by the Government Printing works in Adelaide. The 4d was not issued until January 1867 and an early proof printing was made in London during 1866. A perforating machine was sent out to the colony in 1867 and it is probable that this piece was supplied with that machine as a guide. PHOTO - see plate no. | £400 | ||||||||||||||||
