BRUCE FAMILY ARCHIVE; c.1800-1900 archive of letters (most envelopes have had stamps removed) written by or to Bruce and members of his family (particularly his daughter and son-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Alexander). Bruce's important 1842-5 Hong Kong archive was sold in Cavendish's Dec. 2000 auction (see the introduction on p.70 of that catalogue); this appears to be the balance of the papers from which that group of 1842-5 letters came. MILITARY - WWI BRITISH NAVAL MAIL - IDENTIFIED SHIPS' CENSOR MARKS COLLECTION; Album housing remarkable Collection of 1914/8 cards/covers censored on British naval vessels with wide variety of ships' censor marks; mostly very fine strikes and all identified according to Gould's naval mail book. Arranged alphabetically with very little duplication; the product of much diligent searching and research. The scarce named ship-censor marks are CURACOA (front), GERANIUM, IMPERIEUSE, IMPREGNABLE, JUPITER, REPULSE (name excised), SAPPHIRE, VIVID and WOOLWICH. In addition there is Feb./March 1915 stamples O.A.S. PPC (printed in Callao, Peru) to GB with the scarce small "PASSED/H.M.S. KENT/CENSOR" circular mark (this ship is famous for taking part in the Battle of the Falkland Islands just before this card was sent), regd. env. ex H.M.S. China and the scarce 2-ring "NORTHERN PATROL" mark. Excellent nucleus for expansion. Plus the Gould and mark books or Naval mails & Censorship. (84 covers/cards, 2 books + 1 front).

THE ORIGINS OF POSTAL STATIONERY - 17th CENTURY PREPAID "AQ" LETTER-SHEET OF VENICE; 1641 usage of the "N9090 Francesco Millo Dacio V" printed letter-sheet (some faults - mainly internal - Giorgio dal Gian No.23, issued 1639) used within Venice and clearly dated in 3 places. The printed text inside is headed "A Q" with the arms of Venice between, and refers to the prepayment of "delli soldi 4 per lettera" which was a neat way of the city fathers collecting tax towards the costs of providing the fresh water supply. This type of "AQ" letter-sheet is widely held to have been the world's first Postal Stationery. Seldom seen. [Ex Frank Staff.]
