Very rare to find a Prestamp Valentine postally used, and this is the earliest "rude" example that we can recall having seen. ENGLISH CIVIL WAR AFTERMATH - LETTER SENT WITH SIX CAVALRYMEN FROM SHREWSBURY; 12th Nov. 1660 fine EL from "Shrewsbury" signed by "[Colonel] John Birch" (appointed by the "Committee for Disbanding the Army" after the Restoration of King Charles II to collect each county's poll-money to pay off Cromwell's old army), addressed "For ye High Sheriffe of ye County of Derby, These.". Rare cross-country letter of this period; the addressee's draft replies on the reverse reveal that this letter had been sent specially from Shrewsbury to Derby with "six horse[men who] came on purpose for it [viz £348-10s-9d in cash] from Shrusbury" [sic]. Historical letter with good detail of the system by which the forces were paid off after the English Civil War. Exhibition quality.

COLUMB - EARLY POST OFFICE POSTAGE DUE ACCOUNT FOR "£3-19s-2d"; 27th Feb. 1800 manuscript account headed "Mr Paynter Dr. to the Post Office to a bill delivered [for] £3-19-2", listing further itemised postage items for late Jan. and all of Feb., bringing the new total to "£6-6[s]-6[d]". The account was paid with a £7 bill and is noted as being for "Mr. Paynter, Trekenning" (a hamlet very near to St. Columb). Rare insight into how early postage due was not always collected on a daily basis even in country areas. The almost daily entries range from 3d ("paid to Bodmin") to 2s-11d ("2 Letters").

THE RARE RED "EDIN=/BURGH" MARK; 3rd Aug. 1751 E (the date previously read as "1757", but dating from 1751 in our opinion) to York charged "2" (to Berwick) and then "6" (plus the 4d on to York), having a very fine (for this) strike of the rare 2-line "EDIN=/BURGH" mark (Auckland/Stables ED13; only example recorded?) nicely placed on the lower flap. This type of mark was only used on mail to the north of England; Edinburgh's Bishop Mark was used for such letters from the 1750s. Few known and of Exhibition quality.
