AIRMAILS: 1940-41 covers (2), the first being a censored registered cover to France bearing 5c & 1fr adhesives tied by Port Vila datestamps of 5 June despatched from Port Vila via the mail vessel "Malaita", arriving at Sydney (where it was censored) on 22 June, whence it was flown to France but was held up en route and did not arrive at Valence until 9 September; the second being a 1941 cover to the USA bearing "France Libre" 5c (2), 10c & 15c (2) but with a further adhesive removed, endorsed "By Panair". This item was despatched to Noumea via the "Malaita" where it was censored by the French authorities & forwarded to Auckland by Pan-Am on FM-19, whence it was transported to Sydney (where it was opened, examined & resealed) via the weekly Trans-Tasmanian air service. One of only five known PAN-AM covers originating in the New Hebrides. A scarce pair. |
