MILITARY - CRIMEAN WAR - CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE: 1854 (27 Oct.) 4pp letter (no env.) from Lt. Douglas Dyneley (23rd Welch Fusiliers) at Sebastopol to his sister - "Wednesday our Friends the Russians endeavoured to force in our rear and by some mistake the Light Cavalry were ordered to charge, the part of the Enemy...was not clearly specified and instead of charging a battery of four guns they charged 17 guns & they only mustered afterwards 183, some number like 800 went to the charge". Also a 4pp letter (10 Sept. 1855) from Capt. Edward Dyneley at Balaclava describing the assault on the Redan, the subsequent death from wounds of his brother Douglas and the courage of the 23rd's Surgeon, Henry Sylvester in braving fire to treat him. (He was later to receive the V.C. for this action.). Also copies of service records, prints etc. (2 letters etc.). |

(opened out) with faint/overstruck Army HQ Type I c.d.s. in green-blue, strip of three 1d Reds affixed with sealing wax & with numeral (34) obliterator. |

MILITARY - CRIMEAN WAR - LORD RAGLAN: 1855 (16 Feb.) 2pp memorandum in Raglan's hand - "Yesterday evening riding considerably to the front of the 90th Regt and about ‡ a mile to the right of Mr Rickets house and in advance of it, on a track leading to the right I found a gun apparently a 32 Pounder with its ships carriage and a sling carriage. I was told that it had been there some time. Are you aware why it has been left? There seemed to be nothing wrong in the sling carriage. Raglan." Folds otherwise fine. |
