AN EARLY POSTAL USEAGE OF A REVENUE ADHESIVE TO PAY POSTAGE TO USA: 1874 (1 Jan.) env. from Raphoe to N. York franked with GB 1d fiscal stamp with numeral cancellation. The env. has m/s "Revenue Stamp" and more importantly "to be sent by the Canadian Mail from Miville on friday 2nd January 1874". The endorsement apears to indicate that the transfer of mail to cross the Atlantic could be made at the tiny fishing village of Moville. The Raphoe P.O. had probably run out of normal postage stamps or it may be that the new year celebrations had taken their toll. Enclosed is a copy of an article about this cover by Bill Kane.
