'V'-TYPE DOTTED LONDON 'FREE' DATESTAMP: 24 July 1799 free front from 'SUDBURY' (Suffolk: fine concave mark, top left) to London with a very fine strike of the extremely rare red dotted 'FREE/(Crown)' c.d.s. with 11 'V' marks attached around the foot of the circle [Jay L784, only recorded for 23/24 July 1799]. This is, arguably, the rarest of all Free marks and certainly the most famous among collectors. It seems very likely that the 'V' marks were a n unsuccessful experiment for differentiating the evening duty usage of a mark; the first double-rim type which was to become the standard evening-duty type, is recorded from 8 June 1797. This was the first example of this mark to be recorded (see c1940 article by Col. Crouch included with this lot) and was illustrated in Lovegrove (p35); only two other examples are known - both on covers, one of which sold in Cavendish's Nov. 1996 'Pepys' auction for £4,221. An important exhibition item. PHOTO see plate no 4A |

The same date as the 'V'-mark in the previous lot and therefore strong evidence that the 'V'-marks indicated evening duty rather than a separate design. Exhibition item. PHOTO see plate no 4A |

IMPOSSIBLY-DATED '1802' 'O'-CODED FREE MARK: 24 July 1802 free front from London to Kent, presumably never sent by post (other 'unused' fronts are known) but enhanced with a very fine Posthumous 'O'-coded crown-on-top 'FREE' d.s. This is the earliest recorded date for a supposed 'O'-coded mark but it pre-dates all the crowned marks by 5 years and is of the 1838 design! [Ex Col. Crouch]. PHOTO see plate no 4A |

THE VERY RARE 'LARGE N' CODE LONDON CROWNED 'FREE' D.S. ON COMPLETE COVER: 31 Oct. 1837 EL (minor wear - mostly internal) franked from Manchester to London with an almost very fine strike of one of the rarest of all London 'FREE' marks: the supplementary 1837 'N'-coded mark [Lovegrove JL37b; this cover illustrated by him p45]. This is the only cover with this 1837 mark - not to be confused with the common 1838-40 'small-N' type - that we have recorded in over 20 years of careful searching! It is only known on this cover and the front in the next lot as far as we know. a major Free Frank Rarity. PHOTO see plate no 4B |
