JOHN'S: 1841 (29 July) EL (toned fold between lines of address & some reinforced folds) from St. John's N.B. to "Gold Street, New York" (privately carried to the city & posted there) with a mostly v.fine two-ring "NEW YORK/AUG 2/PENNY POST" c.d.s. neatly placed on the front. An early & unusual example of this local US post that took its name from the British postal system of 1839/40. Exceptional on BNA mail.

VILLAGE POSTMARK COLLECTION: Carton containing an extensive array of village postmarks on loose sheets (with supporting photographs of the P.O. in question) and in 3 albums with cancellations on loose stamps from 1872 and on commercial, special event and registered covers back to 1935, quite a number of the latter with varieties/mistakes in c.d.s.'s such as letters and/or figures upside down. Villages represented include Arnos Vale, Diamond Village, Evesham, Greggs, Lowmans Hill, New Ground, Orange Hill, Questelles, Richland Park, Rilland Hill and Sandy Bay, some of these offices being so small that they handled as few as 50 letters a week in the mid-1970's!
