VILLAGE POSTMARK COLLECTION: Carton containing an extensive array of village postmarks on loose sheets (with supporting photographs of the P.O. in question) and in 3 albums with cancellations on loose stamps from 1872 and on commercial, special event and registered covers back to 1935, quite a number of the latter with varieties/mistakes in c.d.s.'s such as letters and/or figures upside down. Villages represented include Arnos Vale, Diamond Village, Evesham, Greggs, Lowmans Hill, New Ground, Orange Hill, Questelles, Richland Park, Rilland Hill and Sandy Bay, some of these offices being so small that they handled as few as 50 letters a week in the mid-1970's! PACKET/7 OCT 94/1.0" transit mark in red and on reverse Presteign (sic) arrival mark the next day; this card was written on board H.M.S. 'Waterwitch', a naval survey ship, which is thought to have called at Freetown on her outward voyage to the South West Pacific. Also a fine sepia PPC franked with KGV ‡d adhesive sent to Switzerland in 1914 and WWI censored PPC of Freetown addressed to London postmarked NO 2/17 and bearing single line h.s. "Passed by Censor" in black (Martin & Walton type 2) with large blue "3" added in crayon. (3 items). |
