THE RARE PIETERMARITZBURG "GRILLE OF DOTS" CANCEL ON INTERNAL COVER: 22nd. Aug. [1857? - paper wmk. "1856"] EL from "P.M.Burg" ("I am now living in the country, but am in town for a day or two to purchase cattle & c...") to Durban endorsed "PAID" & franked by an 1857-59 3d rose (22x29mm) tied by a very fine strike of the rare P.M. Burg "Grille of Dots" cancel with a light oval "POST OFFICE/P.M.BURG" mark alongside. Few examples of this distinctive short-lived cancellation are recorded on cover. [The only Grille of Dots cover in the "Bill Hart" auction - lot 360; a 1/- green to GB, sold for £2,530 at Cavendish in June 1993]. PHOTO see plate 7B
