MARITIME: 1793-1806 quartet inc. two EL's written by William Hoste comprising 1793 to his father in Norfolk written aboard the "Agamemnon" (Nelson's first ship of the line) on which he was serving as a midshipman & 1806 to the same addressee, written on board the "Amphion" (a frigate captured by the then Captain Hoste), 1798 letter written on board the "Ville de Paris" off Cadiz signed "St. Vincent" and 1812 letter to William Hoste ex Rear Admiral Thomas Francis Fremantle containing orders regarding Hoste's ship the "Bacchante" and the blockade of Corfu. Interesting contents throughout but particularly in the 1793 letter which is quoted in Pocock's "Remember Nelson" (page 43 para 3) regarding an incident with enemy ships at Cagliari. Pocock's book on William Hoste accompanies this fascinating lot.

MARITIME: 1803 EL from a Captain Tucker imprisoned at Fort Amsterdam, Curacao, "Per His Majesty's Service" to Sir John Thomas Duckworth, KB, Rear Admiral of the Fleet & Commander in Chief, Jamaica with very interesting contents referring to the poor conditions experienced by Tucker & his crew as prisoners of the Dutch after having been forced to surrender HM Sloop "Surinam" in September of that year.
