| 154 | TO INDIA - THE RARE "CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/PACKET-LETTER" OVAL DATESTAMP ON COVER; 22nd Feb. 1819 E to Calcutta charged "3/6" with an almost very fine strike of this very rare datestamp (one of the rarest of all Cape marks, and only used on the little-used and very costly Packet Mail services c.1816-9) nicely placed on the front. The letter was much redirected and has a fair red Calcutta arrival d.s. and a poor boxed "KING'S POSTAGE..." charge-mark on the reverse. Endorsements include "gone to Europe", "Ret[urne]d from Gairzapore the 13 July '19", and the final addres "Care [of] Brigade Major, King's Troops, Calcutta". Few examples (10 at most) of this mark - the only Cape Packet letter mark - are known. Exhibition item. PHOTO - see plate no. | £1200 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 155 | TO G.B. - THE RARE "CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/PACKET LETTER" OVAL DATESTAMP STRUCK IN ERROR ON COVER; 26th July 1819 EL (written in Dutch; complete with original enclosure) to Huth & Co. in London having a very fine strike of this rare Packet Letter datetsamp (crossed by filing crease) on the front, overstruck deliberately by the London Ship Letter Branch's "Crutched Cross" Inspector's Mark (Jay L1330; only recorded in 1819 in this colour) in black, because the letter was not carried by Packet Ship, and so with a black boxed "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" mark (Rob.In.2; first recorded year of usage) alongside, and a "1 Oz 3/-" charge instead of the 16s-8d rate that would have been payable on a Packet Letter. Rare and probably unique combination of very elusive marks. [With 1957 French photographic "A. BRUN" Certificate of Genuineness.] PHOTO - see plate no. | £1200 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
