Dorp to Cradock (fine black oval d.s. of both on flaps), endorsed "Regd.", franked by a pair of SG6 4d's (clear margins all round though close at lower left) and SG7 6d (good to wide margins but shaved & creased corner at lower right) all tied by very light "C/GH" barred triangles. Very attractive and rare; few internal registered Cape Triangular covers are known. [Ex Dale Lichtenstein, 1989.] PHOTO - see plate no. £1000
374 1s-4d RATE - QUADRUPLE LETTER-RATE COVER WITH 1/- BRIGHT YELLOW-GREEN & 4d BLUE; 9th April 1859 E (vertical creases clear of stamps) from "BEDFORD" (poor red oval d.s. on flap) to "CRADOCK" (address crossed through but with v. fine black oval arrival d.s. on front) franked by SG6a 4d (clear to wide margins all round) and SG8 1/- (good to wide margins all round) tied by light barred triangles in opposite corners. Attractive and a rare rate. PHOTO - see plate no. £500
375 2s-8d RATE - PAIRS OF 1/- BRIGHT YELLOW-GREEN & 4d BLUE ON OCTUPLE INTERNAL LETTER-RATE COVER; 1860 E (side-flaps removed and other faults; dated from manuscript note inside which suggests that this wrapper originally contained legal documents) addressed to "Graaff Reinet" franked by SG8 1/- pair (close to wide margins all round; ironed crease and hinged to cover) and SG6a pair (very wide margins all round except close at top right) tied in opposite corners by fine "C.GH" barred triangles. 376 3s-2d RATE - PAIRS OF 1/- DEEP DARK GREEN & 4d BLUE WITH 6d SLATE-VIOLET SINGLE ON REGISTERED OR OVERPAID 8/9-TIMES LETTER RATE COVER; 8th Oct. 1863 large env. (reduced at left, folded round at right, with toned - sellotape - central fold, filing notes affect address, etc.) from "CAPE TOWN" (v. fine red oval d.s. on reverse) to "GRAAFF-REINETT" (near fine red oval d.s. on the front), exceptionally tied by 1/- SG8b pair (close to v. wide margins except at right), 4d SG6a pair (close to wide margins all round) and single 6d slate-violet (shade not listed by SG; close to wide margins except at lower left), all tied by mostly fine barred triangles. Either the sender did not have access to 1d values and so overpaid 2d for the 9-times 4d letter-rate, or the cover was endorsed "Regd." on part that has been removed and this was an 8-times 4d rate plus the 6d fee; the original contents appear to have been legal documents relating to "P.J.Bonner's Estate". The highest internal rate of the period that we have recorded. Very rare 3-Colour multiple franking. [Ex Maria de La Queillerie.] PHOTO - see plate no. £1500
UNUSUAL FRANKINGS TO GREAT BRITAIN
377 1d SOLDIER's CONCESSION RATE COVER TO G.B. WITH 1d DEEP CARMINE-RED FROM KING WILLIAM's TOWN; 11th July 1864 env. (minor edge wear) to London headed & countersigned for the Concession Rate for a Private in the "96th Regiment of Foot" and franked by a single 1d SG18 (good to wide margins all round, though somewhat faded and minor corner crease) tied by unclear large "C/GH" barred triangle, with v. fine red "PAID/DEVONPORT/CAPE·PACKET" c.d.s. alongside and overstruck red oval "KING·WILLIAMS·TOWN" d.s. on the flap. Attractive example of this rare 1d rate franking. PHOTO - see plate no. £3000
378 1d SOLDIER's CONCESSION RATE - SUCCESSFUL ABUSE OF THE PRIVILEGE BY A CIVILIAN; 14th April 1859 env. (vertical crease clear of stamp and some edge wear) from "GRAHAMS TOWN" (near fine red oval d.s. on back) to Colchester endorsed "Per Mail Steamer" at top and signed "Ch. Buchanan, Clerk (?) St.(?) Off. G(?). M.S." at lower left of address (possibly a Missionary Society official?!), merely franked by a single SG5 1d Brick-red (wide margins all round, but rubbed in margin at left and point of corner shaved at right) tied by a light "C/GH" barred triangle. There is a very fine blue "PLYMOUTH/PACKET-LETTER" c.d.s. on the reverse and a red "LONDON/PAID" c.d.s. on the front; it seems the Post Offices in both countries failed to notice the lack of a soldier's regimental heading to the letter and the civilian nature of the signature. Rare thus. PHOTO - see plate no. £1500
379 THE VERY RARE 3d PRINTED MATTER RATE TO G.B. - 1d DEEP ROSE-RED BLOCK OF THREE ON COMPLETE ADDRESSED WRAPPER; 20th Nov. 1858 complete wrapper (open at each end as per regulations) endorsed "Published in the Colony", sent from Cape Town (fine red c.d.s. on back) and addressed to Edinburgh; franked by a Block of 3 SG5b (shaved to wide margins; two stamps with faults) tied by two mostly fine "C/GH" barred triangles with red crayon "2#" Accountancy Marking on the front and fine small blue "CAPE·PACKET/DEVONPORT" c.d.s. on the back. This 3d-rate (for printed works published in the Colony) was very little used (indeed, no 3d stamp was introduced in C.G.H. until the 1879 overprint) and we have recorded only one other example - the Maxwell Joseph 1860 magazine front page (lot 336 in the 1982 sale) - with this Cape Triangular franking. Important Exhibition item. [Ex Maria de La Queillerie, 1970.] PHOTO - see plate no. £1500

(partial "CAPE PACKET/DEVONPORT" and fine red London c.d.s.'s on reverse), franked by a G.B. 6d lilac (SG70; faults in one corner) tied by a manuscript cancellation and clearly accepted as valid for postage in place of the normal C.G.H. 6d lilac. There is an endorsement "4601 P. S[anta]. M[aria]a. Novella" on the front and manuscript "20" & "24" charges for Italian postage. This is the only such example of G.B. stamps being accepted for postage in the Cape during the Classic period that we have recorded. Important Exhibition item for both Cape and G.B. Specialists. [With 1997 B.P.A. Certificate of Genuineness.] PHOTO - see plate no. £1200

Rare thus; the higher rate being charged for the faster "pr Mail Steamer" routing. [Ex Dale Lichtenstein, 1989.] PHOTO - see plate no. £650

(8th Oct.) on the back, as well as Mauritius P.O. endorsements; "Not known N.1, 10 October..." and "Not Known in N.2...". There is a final arrival charge of "1"(d) on the front in manuscript. An amazing, Unique and Highly Important Classic Issues cover connecting these two supremely famous stamp-issuing countries. One of only two such redirected Mauritius/Cape of Good Hope covers that we have recorded, and the only one with Lapirot Issues (the other - from the same correspondence but posted from a Port Louis sub-office - was posted a day later than this cover and merely has a single Britannia 6d).
