SG. 5 (1d) ON COVERS
290 MARGINAL BLOCK OF FOUR 1d BRICK RED ON CREAM PAPER; Very attractive 8th March 1861 E from "PORT ELIZABETH" (red oval d.s. on flap) to Cape Town franked by a spectacular Block of Four of SG5 (excellent margins all round) with full marginal selvedge (ironed out vertical filing crease affects the block) tied by barred "C/GH" triangles. Exhibition item. PHOTO - see plate no. £3000
291 RARE 1d SINGLE FRANKING NEWSPAPER RATE WITH "1½c/SCHIEDAM" ACCOUNTANCY MARK; Attractive top half of the front page of the 20th Nov. 1861 "Commercial and Shipping Journal" of Cape Town, franked by a very fine SG5a 1d Rose (with good to wide even margins) tied by a very light "C/GH" barred triangle (leaving almost all the portrait clear); having an almost fine strike of the scarce triangular framed Schiedam "1½c" arrival mark at top left. Clearly this newspaper was sent at the 1d rate to Holland. (It would have had a narrow plain paper address wrapper across the middle when folded up, which has understandably not survived). Exhibition quality. [Ex Bonaventure, 1993, lot 127; sold for £2,990.] PHOTO - see plate no. £2000
292 1d ROSE SINGLE FRANKING ON LOCAL 1d-RATE CAPE TOWN COVER; 30th June 1862 local E (overall creasing and reinforced along folds) franked by a 1d Rose SG5a (good to wide margins; some rubbing in margins) tied by a very fine "C/GH" barred triangle with orange oval d.s. across the join on the reverse. PHOTO - see plate no. £400
293 BLOCK OF FOUR 1d ROSE WITH MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATIONS; 3rd/6th Dec. 1863 EL (contents headed at "Vrolykheid") to Willow Moore, posted from "ALIWAL" (v. fine black oval d.s. across the join), franked by a 1d Rose SG5a Block of Four (shaved at right with good to wide margins elsewhere, but having pre-usage horizontal crease), cancelled by a manuscript squiggle, consistent with the known practice of the time when sending stamped mail by native messenger from a country area to a Post Office, to prevent pilfering. The block is tied by the "M" at the start of the address (which is under the block) being written over the stamp as well, and this may have been the sender's additional security measure. Rare thus; few manuscript cancels on 1d frankings have survived on cover. [Ex Bonaventure, 1993.] PHOTO - see plate no. £500
294 CORNER EXAMPLE OF THE 1d ROSE ON LOCAL ITEM; c.1864 front (faults) addressed to Cape Town, franked by an attractive 1d Rose SG5a (very wide margins on two sides; from the corner of the sheet) tied by a light vertical oval barred "3" cancel (introduced from 1864 and so rare on the early Perkins Bacon issue such as this, even off cover) for the local 1d rate. Rare thus. PHOTO - see plate no. £240
SG. 6 (4d) ON COVERS
295 PAIR OF 4d BLUE ON "TOO LATE" COVER TO G.B.; Attractive 6th/12th Nov. 1856 E (central fold clear of stamps & marks) from "GRAHAMSTOWN" (red oval d.s.'s on reverse) to Bristol "By First Ship", franked by a pair of SG6a 4d's (close to wide margins) tied by a single very fine "C/GH" barred triangle, with m/s "8" (British arrival Ship Letter rate) and red manuscript "Too Late" (of Grahamstown?) alongside. Clearly the letter just missed one sailing and was delayed a few days until the next opportunity. Exhibition quality. PHOTO - see plate no. £800
296 PAIR OF 4d BLUES WITH MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATION ON INTERNAL COVER; 3rd Nov. 1860 env. from "CAPE TOWN" (parrtial red oval d.s. on flap) to "Bishop's Court" franked by a fine pair of 4d SG6a cancelled by a black manuscript "grid" of bars. Very similar to the two Jan./Feb. 1861 covers with manuscript cancels addressed to England in the Dale Lichtenstein auction (1989; lots 267/8, which were addressed in the same distinctive hand-writing). Rare and attractive. [Ex Bonaventure, 1993.] PHOTO - see plate no. £500
297 4d DEEP BLUE SINGLE FRANKING WITH TWO DIFFERENT TOWNS' BARRED CANCELS ON INTERNAL COVER; 22nd June 1861 E (minor creasing, clear of stamp) from "HANOVER" (scarce black c.d.s. across join) to Graaff Reinet franked by a fine full margined SG6 tied by one light and one very clear "CG/H" barred triangle (clearly separately struck; lightly at Hanover - with the large 35mm type - and more carefully on arrival at Graaff Reinet, with the smaller 30mm type). Good example of the internal 4d rate, and a rare double cancellation. PHOTO - see plate no. £500

Snell & Co., D'Urban, Natal", franked with a pair (close to wide margins except where overlapped at left) and single (good to very wide magins) of SG6a tied by light barred "C/GH" triangles. Plus a tragic 1869 large part front (faults) addressed to Hanover with two almost full margined 1d Deep Rose-reds (SG5b) tied by "C/GH" barred triangles (with 1956 BPA certificate rightly suggesting thart other stamps had been lost), and 1860 E from Cape Town to Graaff Reinet with 1855-63 4d (creased) tied by fair "C/GH" barred triangle.
