7 THE RARE OOTSI TELEGRAPH C.D.S. ON MAFEKING BESIEGED COVER: 1900 (8 May) An opened out env. from Mafeking to London franked with 6d on 2d Mafeking Besieged pair (SG. 13) tied by "MAFEKING/C.G.H." c.d.s. On reverse is a fine strike of the "O- -S/TELEGRAPHS" c.d.s. in use in May 1900 for the armoured train to Bulawayo. The env. is numbered 484 and initialled "HRE" (H.R. 31 A RARE FIRST DAY AFTER TRANSFER COVER: 1895 (11 Nov.), "first day after transfer" locally used "Powter" cover, bearing ½a, 1a, 2a & 2½a tied by "MOMBASA/A/NO 11/95" squared circle cancellations, two vertical creases, one crosses the 1a and small tear at top of cover, backstamped with a single circle datestamp. Six of these covers are known, all locally addressed and bearing the four "on India" values available at Mombasa on that day. PHOTO - see plate no. £200

40 JOHAN VAN RIEBEECK - THE FIRST GOVERNOR OF THE FORT OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE; 1652/62 Entire (central fold slightly toned; presumably from Amsterdam) beautifully addressed in Dutch (with full transcription & translation courtesy of the Rijk Museum) to Riebeeck at the "Caep de Goode Hoope" and endorsed with the name of the ship ("By the galliot [=galley?] the Tulip") that carried the letter. Marvellous historical Page One item for any Cape collection; few covers connected with the first Governor remain in private hands. PHOTO - see plate no. £1000
41 GOVERNOR CORNELIS VAN QUAELBERG 1666 LETTER; Attractive long folded wrapper (presumably from Amsterdam) clearly dated "27th Xbre (?Dec.) 1666" on the front with beautiful address to Quaelberg at "Cabo de Bonne Esperance" and endorsed "p. Schip Batavia dat Godt geleijde" (which God may guide). Rare item connected with the third Cape Commander who only served there for less than two years. PHOTO - see plate no. £400
42 GOVERNOR JOHAN BAX c.1677 LETTER; c.1677 E (overall toning; from Amsterdam?) addressed to this short-lived Cape Governor; "Guvernor Dee Hr. Backs...Capo De Bonisraanz". Bax only served in the Cape from March 1676 to his death in June 1678. Rare. PHOTO - see plate no. £300
43 GOVERNOR SIMON VAN DER STEEL c.1685 LETTER; 1685 fine small Entire (from Amsterdam?) neatly addressed in Dutch (transcription & translation courtesy of the Rijk Museum); "The noble honourable well wise manful and thoughtful Sir, the noble Sir Simon van der Stel, Extraordinary Councillor of the Netherlands India and Governor at the Cape the Good Hope" ("Kaap de Goede Hoop"). Attractive and rare cover addressed to the man who was Cape Governor from 1678 to 1691. (Stellenbosch was named after him.) PHOTO - see plate no. £300
44 RARE EARLY INTERNAL CAPE OF GOOD HOPE COVER; 1681 E from "Cape Town" (date and place in pencil) addressed to Johannes Starrenburg in "Stellenbosch" with fine red wax Dutch East India Co. seal. In 1681 Starrenburg was the Landdrost of the Burgher War Council of Stellenbosch and Drakenstein. Very rare; by far the earliest internal Cape cover in this collection, and 100 years earlier than most recorded internal Cape covers! PHOTO - see plate no. £500
45 GOVERNOR WILLEM ADRIAAN VAN DER STEEL c.1703 LETTER; Attractive c.1703 E addressed to Willem van der Steel who succeeded his father in 1699 but was sacked in 1707; attractively addressed to him as Governor at "Cabo de Goede Hoop". PHOTO - see plate no. £240

47 ACTING GOVERNOR JAN CORNELIUS D'ABLING c.1707 LETTER; c.1707 E (from Amsterdam? - one flap removed and overall toning but sound) addressed to D'Abling at the "Casteel de Goede Hoop". He was only acting Governor from June 1707 to Feb. 1708. Rare thus. PHOTO - see plate no. £300
48 GOVERNOR LOUIS VAN ASSENBURGH c.1710 LETTER; c.1710 E (from Amsterdam? - with completely legible off-set of long P.S. from the writer, "Henricus Beek") to van Assenburgh at the "Casteel de Goede Hoop". Rare letter to the Governor who was only in office from Feb. 1708 to Dec. 1711. £200
49 ACTING-GOVERNOR WILLEM HELOT c.1712 LETTER; Attractive c.1712 E (small hole just clear of address does not detract) beautifully addressed to Samuel Elsevir c/o Willem Helot at the "Cabo de Bon Esperance" and endorsed with the name of the ship that carried it; with note that it was from "Count van Vink" (in Holland?) on the flap. 50 GOVERNOR MAURITS PASQUES DE CHAVONNES; 1719 E (legible off-set of the final dated page of the letter - ex "Stellenbosch"? - on reverse of this sheet) neatly addressed to the Governor who served in the Cape from 1714 to 1724, "Int. Casteel de Goede Hoop". Apparently a rare early internal cover. PHOTO - see plate no. £240
51 ACTING-GOVERNOR JAN DE LA FONTAINE c.1733 LETTER; Fine c.1733 E (with fine red wax seal; from Holland?) addressed to Fontaine at the "Cabo de Goede Hoop"; he was acting-Governor from 1729 to 1737. £200
52 GOVERNOR RYK TULBAGH c.1760 LETTER; Attractive c.1760 E (from Holland?) addressed to this popular Governor at the "Cabo de Goede Hoop" while he was in office from 1751 to 1771. PHOTO - see plate no. £200
53 EARLY INGOING COVERS TO ORDINARY CITIZENS; c.1764 (pencil date) E and 22nd Feb. 1768 E (closed tears and wear, but with contemporary filing note "Brantwoord den 22 Febr. 1768" on flap) addressed to "ordinary" people at the "Capo de Goede Hoop"; the latter with annotation that it was sent by the ship "Huyster Mye". Presumably both from Holland; rare thus. (2 covers). £150
54 GOVERNOR JOACHIM VAN PLETTENBERG c.1780 LETTER; Fine c.1780 E (from Holland?) neatly addressed to this Governor who was in office in the Cape from 1771 to 1785, addressed to the "Cabo de Goede Hoop". £150
55 GOVERNOR CORNELIS JACOB VAN DE GRAAFF c.1788 LETTER; Fine c.1788 E (from Holland? - with red wax anchor seals) neatly addressed to van de Graaff (who was in office in the Cape from 1785 to 1791, and after whom Graaff-Reinet was named) at the "Cabo de Goede Hoop". This was the first Governor who made regular arrangements for Cape citizens' letters to be sent back to Holland; in March 1785 he ordered that; "Letters may henceforth be sent to the Netherlands by private individuals in ships of the Return Fleet, provided they are handed in on the day before sailing". £150
56 ACTING-GOVERNOR JOHAN ISAAC RHENIUS 1792 LETTER; 1792 E (blue crayon date on front, with closed tear affecting address but with fine red wax seals - from Holland?) addressed to the man who was responsible for the start of the first Postal Service in the Cape (with the appointment of the first Postmaster on 28th Dec. 1791); addressed to him at the "Cabo Goede Hoop", and presumably delivered by the new postla service Free of postage. £150

57 DOUBLE STRIKE OF THE "VOC/6St" MARK FOR THE 12 St CHARGE TO BE COLLECTED IN THE CAPE; c.1793 E (minor flap faults) from Holland (?) addressed to a Magistrate (?) in the "Cabo de Goede Hoop", having one fine strike and one partial strike of the "VOC/6St" in circle charge-mark (the first with closed tear at foot) nicely placed on the front. Genuine double rate covers of this first Cape P.O. period are rare. PHOTO - see plate no. £400
58 1st BRITISH OCCUPATION PERIOD - COVER ADDRESSED TO THE VICTORIOUS BRITISH C-IN-C; 24th Nov. 1796 E (short flap removed but with fine large red wax seal; ex Amsterdam?) addressed to Major General James Henry Craig ("Jacob Hendrik Craig, Gouveneur van Caab de Goiede Hoop...Cabo de Goede Hoop"), without postal marks because Craig was presumably entitled to free postage at this date. Mail from this 1st Occupation Period is rare; there were no examples in the Maxwell Joseph Collection. PHOTO - see plate no. £150
59 THE BATAVIAN REPUBLIC - INTERNAL(?) MILTARY COVER TO THE GOVERNOR; c.1804 E (mostly legible off-set of the original contents visible inside - signed by the General's "Aide de Camp") apparently sent by military means within the Cape, addressed to "Gouveneur" Lieut. General Jan Willem Janssens who was Governor and General-en-Chef from March 1803 to Jan. 1806, during which time he organised regular internal horse-posts in the Cape. Covers of this period are rare. 60 THE BATAVIAN REPUBLIC - INGOING COVER TO THE COMMISSIONER GENERAL WITH DISTINCTIVE AMSTERDAM "FRANCO~" MARKS; Fine c.1804 E (fine red wax seal) addressed to Jacob de Mist "Commissaris van het Staats bewind op de Caap de Goede Hoop" on board the warship Pluto, with no postal charge but with two mostly fine strikes of the black Amsterdam straight-line "FRANCO~" mark (Korteweg type 18; recorded 1761-1810). De Mist was in office from Feb. 1803 to Sept. 1804 and he was responsible for considerable improvements in the internal Cape posts. Rare from this brief Republic period. PHOTO - see plate no. £150
61 "BRIEFSTOK" CLEFT-STICK LETTER; c.1805 E (characteristic wear in vertical line across centre of address panel, consistent with being fixed into a cleft stick for carriage by runner) addressed to "Stellenbos" with a request to the addressee to keep the letter (perhaps as an incentive to the messenger to ensure its delivery in good condition). Good example of this form of private message-despatch that seems to have been unique to the Cape at this period. PHOTO - see plate no. £240

62 OVAL "ARMS" MARK ON FREE O.H.M.S. COVER TO SIMONSTOWN; Attractive c.1810 E endorsed "O.H.M.S." and "Collector of Tithes" with a very fine strike of the first Cape Town mark (with "GR" device in oval laurel leaves frame) nicely placed on the front, addressed to the "Government Resident, Simonstown", with no charge being on official government business.
