Napier" and so not charged internal postage, having a near fine 18th Nov. crowned oval Cape Town d.s. on the front and only charged the "8"(d) British arrival charge with London "SHIP LETTER" on the back. 163 TO FINLAND - INDIA LETTER VIA G.B.; Remarkable Jan. 1849 EL (minor internal faults; written in Swedish) from Cape Town "Per [ship] Essex", addressed to "Helsingfors, Finland" via Huth & Co. in London (that part of the address heavily crossed through in transit) having a very fine oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/(Crown)/CAPE TOWN" mark nicely placed on the front, with a near fine "Aus ENGLAND/Per AACHEN" c.d.s., also having a mostly very fine red boxed "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH" mark (late usage) on the flap. 164 TO G.B. - SOLDIER's 1d+2d CONCESSION RATE COVER; 16th March 1849 E to Glasgow headed & countersigned for a Private in the "91st Regiment" at Grahamstown with a superb oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/(Crown)/CAPE TOWN" mark, and a London handstruck "2" transit charge-mark on the front (in spite of the "Paid 1d" annotation at the foot of the address). 166 TO FRANCE - "UNIQUE" DISINFECTED COVER WITH "COLONIES/&c ART.13" MARK; Attractive 1st June 1853 EL from "Grand Constance, Cap de Bonne Esperance" and addressed to Paris having distinctive rastel-punch holes and chisel-slits of Disinfection, with fine oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/(Crown)/CAPE TOWN" mark on the top flap beside London & Paris c.d.s.'s; also having a mostly very fine red boxed "COLONIES/&c ART.13" mark (Salles3006; the only recorded example on mail from the Cape?) on the front with Calais transit c.d.s. and final "15" charge. 167 TO SPAIN - FORWARDING AGENT CACHET COVERS VIA LONDON, ETC.; Jan. 1862 pair of covers from the same correspondence (one is an EL ex "Cape Town", dated 20th Dec. 1861; the other is an E, apparently in the same hand but without contents) to Cadiz, each posted prepaid 1/- from London on the same day; both have fine blue oval "FORWARDED BY/J.R. THOMSON & Co./LONDON" FAC's on the flap. Rare thus. Plus an 1860 EL from Cape Town to London but also posted in London (with a GB 1d Red) and having a v. fine strike of the same blue oval FAC on the front. (3 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. £150

(m/s date which matches the cover addressed to Ceylon later in this catalogue - under "Frankings to Australia, etc." - which is similarly dated) addressed to a ship's Captain at Cape Town, franked by a fine first Perkins Bacon 4d (SG2; good to wide margins all round) tied by a single light "C/GH" barred triangle. Signed by the sender on the front - "Gilbert Elliot, Capt. A.D.C." and so presumably from a soldier serving in the Cape. Second month of usage and very attractive. 199 PAIR OF 4d DEEP BLUE ON DEEPLY BLUED PAPER - COVER TO G.B. SENT BY STEAMER; 28th Sept. 1854 env. (slight stains mostly on back, but with original contents) from the officer-in-charge of "Kraay-fontein Convict Station" near Paarl) to Glasgow posted from Cape Town on 5th Oct., endorsed by named Steamer (mostly beneath the stamps), franked by a fine pair of SG2 (fine to wide margins all round) just tied by a "C/GH" barred triangle, and charged a further "8"(d) Ship Letter rate on arrival. The writer mentions delaying the letter to catch "a coasting Steamer returning to London for repairs" in stead of a sailing vessel. Good example of this first 4d on cover. PHOTO - see plate no. £650
