MARITIME - VISIT TO HAWAIIAN ISLANDS:1837 (31 October) Remarkable 17pp (plus another 9pp cross-written) narrative letter (No.27) addressed to his children in London by Captain Henry Bruce of HMS 'Imogene', visiting Oahu. He describes the American missionaries' work on the Island and his meetings with members of the Royal Family in considerable detail - inc. King Kanikeaouli (Pamekameha III), dominated by his half sister, Kinau - 'he is an idle youth [who] was afraid of me...he asked Mr Charlton what I would say to King William of him' - but who later asked Bruce for help in reforming his government. He describes a pilgrimage to Karakakova Bay on 'Owhyee' where Captain Cook was killed: 'I stood on the spot of Cook's fall...a mass of black lava rock close to the water where he waited the putting in of his boat during his scuffle with the natives...too late to save his valuable lilfe.' Bruce had a copper plaque erected on a tree which had 'been shot through at the time of the affray' and, later, was presented with a spear which had killed Cook, by the widow of the chief who had used it: 'a long wooden instrument, quite plain, 22 feet in length...secretly preserved, as they set a great value upon it. I hope to present it to the King'. Later, he visited Honolulu and saw the tomb of 'the King & Queen of the Sandwich Islands who died in London' which included a 'French dressing box having eau de Cologne etc. for the use of the inmates'. A wonderful letter, enclosed in a worn postal cover with London d.s. of March 13 1838.

At Valparaiso he records their departure for the Pacific and his intended visit to Queen Pomarre and mentions visiting Oahu, forwarding gifts from Queen Kinau of the Sandwich Islands ('Neck comforters...considered the most valuable present that can be made'), the Pitcairn, Sandwich & Marquesas Islands etc. Back at Spithead, in November 1839, feeling disorientated, for the first time on 3 years he intends to put his letter 'in the Post-Office; 'I suppose they travel that way still, tho' they may now go in Balloons and four times a day for all I know'. MARITIME - WEST AFRICAN STATION, 1851-53: A series of letters written to his daughter by Admiral Bruce during his time on the W.Africa Station, on board HMS 'Penelope'; letters are dated from Liberia, Dahomey, Ascension ('instructed to protect Lagos...As there are no guns we should find them an easy prey'), off the coast of Sierra Leone (where he referred to the slave trade and received a letter from Mrs Bailee of Ordnance House - also enclosed), Gambia, St Helena, Fernando Po ('we had...to drive Kosiko out of Lagos again...they opened fire from the boats and drove [them] out at once...the Ashantees are about to march...in great force...Lagos cannot be left unguarded from the Raids of these neighbouring chiefs') etc. He is a most entertaining correspondent with an eye for detail, the absurd and an appetite for gossip! Also a delightful trio of letters written while Miss Bruce was on board the 'Penelope' in May 1851containing a marriage proposal from one of the Ship's officers, her acceptance and the Admiral's permission for the marriage to take place.
