1652 THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE S.S. GREAT WESTERN - RETURN LEG FROM NEW YORK TO BRISTOL; 30th April 1838 EL from New York (?) to London clearly endorsed "Per Steamer Great Western May 7" on the front with "1/6" (double rate) charge and fine black boxed step-type "BRISTOL/SHIP-LETTER" (Rob.S7) on the front, and 23rd May London arrival c.d.s. on the reverse which ties in exactly with the second half of this famous ship's maiden round-trip voyage. 1654 HOT WELLS SHIP LETTER WITH SCARCE BRISTOL "1/2" SCOTTISH MAIL CHARGE, ETC.; Attractive Nov./Dec. 1838 E (flap faults) endorsed "Great Western Steamer" by the recipient, having a fine Rob.S7 "BRISTOL/SHIP LETTER" on the front as well as a v. fine blue Hot Wells "No.2" Receiving House mark and a very fine strike of the elusive Bristol "1/2" Additional Scottish Mail Tax charge. There is a dated "BRISTOL/PY POST" mark on the flap, and so this is a rare example of a Ship Letter Penny Post cover; one of three Bristol examples that we have recorded (see 7 lots above for another). DATE EXPERIMENTS; Aug. 1840 EL from Marlborough (v. fine red curved "PAID/1" mark on the front) endorsed (at Bristol) "Not to be found" on the front, having two very fine "BRISTOL" c.d.s.'s on the back (in black & in red) as well as a fine strike of the rare tiny "W" in circle with "+" below (BS198) and 4 strikes in red of the date numerals of the c.d.s. alone; "13" (2) and "31"(2). Clearly the P.O. stamper was trying to set up his postmark and used this cover to experiment upon! 1730 POTATO RIOTS c1830-32: Group of lengthy letters addressed to Sir Charles Forbes M.P. in London from his son serving with the Army in Ireland, describing the Troubles, transportation of convicts, public hangings, buying a military commission etc.; from Limerick he writes ''I was ordered out with a dozen dragoons at a moment's notice in pursuit of a mob of 300 peasantry who were digging up & destroying some beautiful meadow land...several horrible murders have occurred within this last week...some very shocking cases'' and from Kilkenny ''our duties have amounted to those of police officers and have disgusted us a good deal..[we] surrounded the gallows...the mob behaved as if the culprits had died martyrs''. All with crowned 'FREE' marks & a variety of postal markings but modern annotations to address panels and general wear; fascinating contents. (9 items). £100
