PHOTO - see plate no. 3 £150

PHOTO - see plate no. 8 £100
RUSSIAN CONSULAR COVER FROM FINLAND TO U.S. VIA BRISTOL; Unusual Aug./Sept. 1862 EL (faults along top edge and one flap cut for display) from "CHRISTINASTAD" (Finnish boxed d.s., with boxed "Porto." mark) to a passenger on a ship at Bristol "Care Russian Consul", charged "111/2" with Bristol's distinctive Postage Due "CH" in circle in black; endorsed "Sailed to New York" and charged "41" and then "46" on the front, with manuscript "15 Sept. '62, paid 46 Cts." (addressee's receipt note?) on the flap, but with no other postal marks. Perhaps the letter was sent from ship to ship in New York harbour? 1631 ZULU WAR - INGOING COVER TO THE COMMANDER OF THE NAVAL DIVISION; 12th June 1879 env. (slightly roughly opened at top) with Plate 16 6d grey tied by v. fine Bristol duplex, addressed "Via Plymouth & Madeira" to "Commander J.W. Brackenbury, H.M.S. Shah, Natal, South Africa", with 12th July Durban transit c.d.s. on the back; Cdr. Brackenbury was with the Naval Division that provided artillery and machine-gun support to the Army units at the time this letter reached Natal. Rare destination; the letter would have reached Cdr. Brackenbury just as the British force was mopping up after their decisive victory at Ulundi on 4th July. PHOTO - see plate no. 8 £120

TO BRISTOL; 1741 EL from Kingston (Jamaica) "p. the Antelope....Q.D.C." charged "In all 1N5" with London transit Bishop Mark (probably landed at Deal or Dover), similar 1754 EL from "Philadelphia" to Stoke Gifford smuggled into England and posted in London to avoid postal charges, and 1745 complete London Gazette with P.O. notice ref. the establishment of Packet Boats for "Jamaica, Barbados, Antegoa, Monserrat, Nevis & St. Christopher's". 1636 THE FIRST TWO "BRISTOL/SHIP LRE" MARKS ON COVERS EX JAMAICA ; 1767/9 pair of EL's from Kingston to London/Leominster by named ships, each with mostly very fine "BRISTOL/SHIP LRE" marks (Rob.S1a - very short-lived type - & S2 respectively); the first with light crease through SL mark & second with minor wear. Rare pair; few pre-1770 Bristol Ship Letters have survived. (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £200
1780's BRISTOL SHIP LETTERS INCL. THE RARE MILEAGE TYPE ; 1783 E (ex W. Indies?) to London with partly fine "BRISTOL/SHIP-LRE" (Rob.S1); plus attractive April 1786 EL from "Argyle Estate, Tobago " to Edinburgh with an almost very fine "SHIP-LRE/BRISTOL, 128/9(?)" (Rob.S4/S4a? - just crossed by very light fold) nicely placed on the front. The latter is a very early example of the rare Mileage Ship Letter that was peculiar to Bristol, and mail this early from Tobago is also rare. (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. 4 £200
THE FIRST TYPE "BRISTOL/SHIP-LRE" MARK; 1790 EL from Jamaica to London (redirected to Scotland) with an almost very fine strike of Rob.S1 (light fold) on the front. Attractive. PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £100
THE SHORT-LIVED OVAL "Ship Letter/(Crown)/BRISTOL" MARK ON TRANSATLANTIC COVER ; 1803 EL (long family letter - full typed transcript) to Louth with a fine to very fine strike of the elusive Rob.S5 mark (only known 1802-10) on the front (part of a further strike alongside). 1640 MARITIME MAIL TO/FROM ANTIGUA, MADEIRA & THE U.S., INCL. "LEEWARD ISLAND/F"; 1801 EL from London to Madeira but sent via a merchant in "Bristol", 1811 EL ex Charleston (US) with mostly very fine red step-type twin-boxed "BRISTOL/SHIP-LETTER" (Rob.S7; first recorded year in red) nicely placed on the front, and disinfected 1815 EL from Antigua to Bristol with chisel-slits and a light Falmouth "LEEWARD ISLAND/F" c.d.s. 1642 THE RARE RED "SQUARED CROWN" OVAL "BRISTOL/SHIP-LETTER" MARK ON OUTGOING LETTER ; 21st Dec. 1814 EL to Madeira prepaid ("P 1/3") and endorsed "p. Ship Sir George Osborn" written from Bristol and most unusually (on an outgoing letter) having a very fine red oval Rob.S6a - only recorded for 1812 according to Tabeart, and not known in black) nicely placed on the front. One of the rarest and most attractive Bristol Ship Letter marks. Exhibition quality. PHOTO - see plate no. 4 £300
EARLY NEVIS COVER WITH BLACK STEP-TYPE "BRISTOL/SHIP-LETTER"; July 1822 EL from "Nevis" to Edinburgh with a fine strike of Rob.S7 in black on the front. An early letter from this small West Indies island. PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £100
DOMESTIC SHIP LETTER COVERS - COASTAL STEAMER RATE TO IRELAND & EVASION OF POSTAGE TO WALES; March 1839 E to Dublin endorsed "p. Steamer" and so entitled to the direct port-to-port Concession Rate of "8"(d) with a fine black "BRISTOL/SHIP LETTER" (Rob.S7) and a near fine red "DUBLIN/Ship Letter" (Rob.S5; creased) on the front; rare cross-Irish Sea cover. Plus unusual 1831 EL from "Bristol" to "Fishguard" but with only a 1d charge, and "HAVERFORD WEST" Penny Post and UDC marks; the contents incl.; "As you cannot afford to pay postage, I am sure I cannot, therefore I will transmit this per steamer to be posted by the P. Post to Fishguard"!! Both covers saved postage. (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £150
SUPERB "INDIA LETTER/BRISTOL" EX MAURITIUS; Jan. 1835 EL to London with a lovely strike of the boxed Rob.In.1 mark (frame crossed by fold) nicely placed on the front. Exhibition quality. PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £150
SEYCHELLES MENTIONED IN MAURITIUS "INDIA LETTER/BRISTOL" COVER ; 10th Feb. 1835 EL from "Port Louis" to London "Pr. Arabian" with a mostly very fine boxed Rob.In.1 "INDIA LETTER/BRISTOL" mark on the front, beside a fair oval framed "COL./POST OFFICE/MAURITIUS" mark; an unusual combination of scarce marks. The contents are also of particular interest; they are a beautifully written detailed account of the arrival at Port Louis of part of a fishing vessel's crew (whalers?) who had been arrested in Mahe (Seychelles), accused of a serious assault in Praslin. Their ship was still impounded in the Seychelles! Fascinating reading and a rare early mention of the Seychelles. PHOTO - see plate no. 4 £300
HOT WELLS SHIP LETTER EX U.S.A., ETC.; Rare Feb./May 1839 EL from "Geneva" (clearly in the U.S. judging by the contents; probably the lakes town in Ontario County, New York state) to London with a fine black "BRISTOL/SHIP LETTER" on the front, but struck alongside a very fine blue Hot Wells Penny Post Receiving House mark, indicating that this letter was handed to the P.O. at this tiny village rather than at the P.O. in Bristol; an exceptional Penny Post Ship Letter. The m/s charge of "4/4" bears this out; it is 3 times the 8d+9d SL+Inland rates charge, plus an extra 1d for the local post. We can recall having seen only two similar covers (both Bristol; one in the Great Western lots, below; the other illustrated in Alan Robertson's "POST ROADS" book, p.28, which may well have been carried on the same voyage from New York). Plus a "normal" 1839/40 E from Port au Prince (Haiti) to London with the same "BRISTOL/SHIP LETTER" mark (crease) but no RH mark. (2 covers). PHOTO - ABOVE £150
THE RARE UNFRAMED "INDIA LETTER/PENZANCE" IN RED ON COVER TO BRISTOL; 1839 EL from Madras to Bristol "p. Barque Lloyds" with a fine red boxed "MADRAS/SHIP LETR/POST PAID" d.s. on the flap beside a very fine red "INDIA LETTER/PENZANCE" mark (Rob.In.2) the latter mark was issued in 1839 and is only known for 1839-40 (the "1830" date in Tabeart must be a mis-print). It seems certain that this "PENZANCE" mark was used in London as one of the reserve set of "emergency" maritime marks (see Tabeart p.39, etc.); few examples are known. PHOTO - see plate no. 4 £150
THE SCARCE SLANTING "BRISTOL/SHIP LETTER" MARK; 1848 E from "Harbour Grace, Nflnd." to Edinburgh with a mostly very fine strike of the elusive Rob.S11 mark in black nicely placed on the front; only recorded by Tabeart for 1846 in this colour. PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £150
Similar 1846 EL from "Parham Hill, Antigua" to Wells "Pr. Brig Steadfast of Bristol" with a mostly fine strike of the rare Rob.S11 mark in black (filing crease) on the front. Scarce place of origin. PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £120
THE RARE "CAPE PACKET/BRISTOL" C.D.S. WITH BRISTOL's RARE HANDSTRUCK "1/-" CHARGE-MARK ; Stampless 17th Feb. 1857 env. (some wear and creasing) to London endorsed "Paid" (Natal postage) with a fine blue "(Crown)/NATAL" c.d.s. on the front, landed at Devonport from the Lindsay Line steamer "Robert Lowe" (see Tabeart, p.43, note 6) with an almost very fine blue "CAPE PACKET/BRISTOL" c.d.s. (slight oil mark at right) on the reverse. Tabeart only records 8 examples of this mark which is only known on S. African mails from March to Sept. 1857, but he does not record the black handstruck "1/-" charge-mark of which there is a very fine strike on the front of this cover. Doubly rare.
