SIEGE OF PARIS BALLOON MAIL
'Le Washington': (Possibly 'Le Non-Dénommé No2') Printed 'Ballon Monte' letter sheet franked by 20c blue with Paris star '3' cancellation & Place de la Madeleine c.d.s. (3e/8 Oct. 70), addressed to Nantes; the correspondent, writing to his parents, gives a clear picture of the City besieged by 'ces Messieurs les Prussians'. A little grubby and with one or two small faults. £80
'Le Garibaldi': Neat flimsy letter addressed to Toulouse & endorsed 'Par ballon monté', franked by 20c blue cancelled by clear GC4277 of the suburban office at La Villette with c.d.s. alongside (3e/19 Oct 70) and backstamped on arrival at Toulouse (1 Nov.70). Writing from the Fort d'Aubervilliers, the writer rails against Bismark - 'Paris s'arme jusqu'au ses dents!' An attractive cover from a scarce office. PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £150
'Le Fulton': Gazette des Absents No 3 addressed to Tours with 20c blue cancelled by Paris star 15 and Rue Bonaparte c.d.s. (6e/ 30 Oct 70) alongside; unclear arrival c.d.s. - probably 3 November. A chatty, personal letter; repaired internally otherwise fine & fresh. £120
'Le Fulton': Neat, attractive EL addressed to London with 'Par ballon monté' endorsement, franked by 30c brown with faint star obliterator and 'Paris/(60)' section de leveé c.d.s. (1/5 31 Oct 70); ambulant transit c.d.s. struck off-cover and fine red 'LONDON-E.C./PAID' c.d.s. (5 Nov). The writer mentions the surrender of Metz and its effect on Parisian morale. An attractive cover. £120
'Le Daguerre': Dépêche-Ballon No 4 addressed to Brittany, the 20c stamp obliterated by Paris star 4 with Rue d'Enghien c.d.s. (8e/ 10 Nov 70); the writer records the fine morale of the Parisians, two months into the Siege - 'un grand diner maintenant (ils sont rares) se compose d'un gigot et d'un morceau de fromage' and mentions Maréchal Bazaine and a 'sortie furieux de 2 ou 3,000 hommes'. Slight tear at seal otherwise fine. £100
'Le Daguerre': Agence Havas News sheet (11 Nov. / French) endorsed 'ballon monté' and addressed to Beaune; Paris c.d.s. (6e/ 11 Nov 70) but stamp removed. Torn around seal otherwise fine; despite fault, a scarce Siege item. £160
'Le Général Ulrich': Gazette des Absents No 8 addressed to the sister of Paul Gauguin at Paramé, franked by 20c Siege Issue cancelled by heavy Paris star 2 with Rue St Lazaire c.d.s. nearby (6e/ 17 Nov 70). This Gazette explains the dépêche réponse system and originally enclosed a dépêche card, the questions forming part of the text of the letter; the correspondent also comments on the war situation, writes of eating rat and adds 'le ballon part à minuit' (dramatic but incorrect - it left on the following evening!). Torn around seals but a fascinating item nevertheless. £170
'La Ville d'Orléans': Gazette des Absents No 9 addressed to Brittany with unclear Rue du Cherche-Midi c.d.s. (2e/ 23 Nov 70) and stamp missing, presumably having been washed off when the mail bags from this beleagured flight were jettisoned into the sea. [The Ville d'Orléans was blown off course & carried over the North Sea before crashing in Norway after a 14 hour flight]. The letter, dated 22 September, mentions news that 3 balloons had been captured by the Prussians and concludes 'j'apercais sauvent les éclaires des coups de canon tirés sur les Prussiens & je m'endorm au bruit de la canonnade'. A fine example of early wreck mail. PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £200
'Le Jules Favre No 2': Scarce underpaid cover - Envelope endorsed Par Ballon monté & addressed to London but franked by 20c blue cancelled by Paris star 4 with c.d.s. of Place de la Bourse (6e/ 30 Nov 70) nearby - underpaid by 10c, the envelope was struck twice with the s/l red 'AFFR.INSUFF./P.1' h.s. and with the circular London 'MORE/TO/PAY' mark near a m/s '4' charge; the reverse shows a 1 December strike of the Paris-Calais ambulant c.d.s. and a London receipt c.d.s. of 6 December. Faults along top edge but a most unusual item of Siege mail. PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £160
'Le Franklin': Neat, fresh example of the Gazette des Absents No 12 addressed to Pau, franked by 20c Siege issue with Paris star 24 cancellation accompanied by Rue du Cléry c.d.s. (4e/ 1 Dec 70); arrival c.d.s. of Pau (5e/ 7 Dec 70) on reverse. The letter refers to General Trochu's sortie to Champigny and the boat-bridge across the Marne amongst other Siege gossip. £140
'Le Denis Papin': EL to London with Ballon monté endorsement, the 30c adhesive cancelled by a crisp Paris star 12 with Boulevard Beaumarchais c.d.s. (5e/ 5 Dec 70) alongside also a good strike of the small boxed 'PD' mark in brown red - unusual on Siege mail; the reverse has a London arrival c.d.s. of 9 December. The cross-written letter mentions that the attaché at the French Embassy in London was able to write regularly to his father, the Duc de la Force, in Paris amongst other Siege news. An interesting item. PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £160
'Le Lavoisier': Flimsy envelope addressed to St Gallen, Switzerland and franked by 30c stamp cancelled by indistinct Paris star 2 with c.d.s. of Rue St. Lazare (4e/ 21 Dec 70) nearby plus uncommon small boxed 'PD' mark in red; the reverse has arrival c.d.s. of Geneva (28 Dec.) & St Gallen (29 Dec.). Small faults but an unusual item. £120
'L'Armée de la Loire': Gazette des Absents No 20 with (text) supplement addressed to Le Hâvre, franked by 20c Siege issue with Paris star 2 cancellation & Rue St Lazare c.d.s. (6e/ 29 Dec 70), the reverse with arrival c.d.s. of 2 January 1871. The letter describes the Prussian bombardment of the Paris forts and discusses the merits of eating mice! Repaired tears on inside flap and a small hole caused by removal of seal but a scarce item complete with supplement. £160
'Le Général Faideherbe': Gazette des Absents No 24 addressed to a village in the Aude and franked by 20c Siege issue cancelled at the suburban office of Les Ternes with unclear GC 3921 and partly fine c.d.s. (6e/ 12 Janv 71); the reverse has a clear strike of the scarce St Foy-le-Grande transit c.d.s. and Bordeaux-Toulouse ambulant (both 14 Jan.) & arrival c.d.s. (16 Jan.). The letter contains family news and details bomb damage in the City. £180
'Le Vaucanson': Printed wrapper (no letter) addressed to Beaumont de Lamagne (Tarn et Garonne), franked by 20 c Siege issue cancelled by faint Paris star 2 with Rue St Lazaire c.d.s. (2e/ 14 Janv 71) alongside. Neat and fresh. £90
ARMISTICE PERIOD - ''Ballon Monté'' to Jersey: Gazette des Absents No 33 with 'PAR BALLON MONTÉ' amended in m/s 'ou autre voie' , franked by Siege issue 10c bistre brown & 20c blue cancelled by unclear strikes of the Paris star 4 with Rue d'Enghien c.d.s. (7e/28 Janv 71 - the day the Armistice was signed) and boxed 'PD' mark; the reverse shows a Lille transit c.d.s. (14 Fevr.) and Jersey arrival (16 Feb.) - the delay is accounted for by the fact that the Prussians detained mail in Paris until the middle of February before releasing letters for foreign destinations, uncensored. The letter mentions the rumour of an Armistice, the uncertainty about whether or not there would be any further balloon flights, the chance of safe conduct passes, the steamer service to Jersey etc. Contemporary ink stain on address panel otherwise a fine and unusual item of mail from the brief Armistice period. PHOTO - INSIDE FRONT COVER £200
Boule de Moulins: Envelope and letter with family news addressed to a soldier in the Garde Mobile with the 'Paris par Moulins (Allier)' endorsement; franked by Bordeaux issue 20c (80c stamp missing, presumably lost during immersion) with GC2242 cancellation and c.d.s. of Marsillargues (2 Janv 71). The usual light staining and a corner fault but an uncommon item. £100
