507 TOULMIN PACKET COVER VIA BATAVIA & INDIA WITH "YASS/POST PAID" , ETC.; Fine 27th May 1846 E to Devon with very fine scarce boxed red "YASS/POST PAID" on the front and fine matching oval "YASS" d.s. on the flap; charged "2/7" on arrival because sent by the Toulmin Packet "St. Vincent" to connect with the P&O service from Batavia via India (fair Calcutta boxed "G.P.O." d.s. on back) to Marseilles (over 1/2oz & up to 1/2oz; 1s-5d GB Packet rate + French 10d + Indian 4d rates). Rare cover from this pioneer service and of Exhibition quality. Plus matching 1847 "NEW ROMNEY/INDIA LETTER" env. from Melbourne "Per Viam" charged a mere 8d and not much slower in transit. The covers are in poor condition and some pages are damaged. The text is readable in all cases and this important document could be used as a basis for a splendid article.      £120

540 1863 Ham 1d Indian Red, an imperf. block of four plate proofs. Torn and other faults as are all other examples of these proofs. An article on these proofs was written in the 1999 philately in Australia with a follow up comment in a later issue. The above block comes from the one sheet sent to Perkins Bacon in 1863 in connection with the order for new paper with the watermark "QUEENSLAND/POSTAGE" etc in script capitals. The whole sheet was scored in corrosive black ink and the proposed watermark was sketched on the reverse of the sheet. The sheet is fully described in Percy de Worms Perkins Bacon Records, vol. 1, p211ff (RPSL 1953). No pre-printing proofs of Ham’s work are recorded. PHOTO - see plate no. 17 £200

RAILWAY/S.A" C.D.S.; 15th May/13th June 1865 env. to "Peualko" (= Pualco) with roulette 2d orange tied by very light "27" Kapunda numeral and m/s squiggle, endorsed "Not here" and so with fine "UNCLAIMED" on the front as well as very fine "TOO-LATE"; on the back is a 75% fine strike of the Type 6 T.P.O. c.d.s. ** 579 THE UNIQUE (?) "G.N. RAILWAY/S.A" SQUARED CIRCLE ON "UNCLAIMED" COVER ; 28th Nov./14th Dec. 1882 "COURT OF INSOLVENCY" wrapper to "Railway Works, Nairne Railway" (= Blackwood) with 1d green tied by part "PORT AUGUSTA" c.d.s. having fine "UNCLAIMED" on the front; the backstamps on the lower flap (displays well) include 80% very fine strike of the early "G.N. RAILWAY/S.A" Squared Circle (type 23; the only example recorded! ) and a fine purple "DEAD LETTER OFFICE. ADELAIDE" c.d.s. Rare; it is thought that this mark was used on the Terowie TPO service, because the Government Gums line's TPO was never used although this Squared Circle was made for it. One of the rarest Australian TPO marks of all, and a Squared Circle rarity. PHOTO - see plate no. 19 £200
