The W. A. Postal service had only been established from 4th Dec. 1829 (and no handstruck postal marks are recorded in private hands before 6th April 1839), and these franking privileges date from the start of the internal postal system on 9th May 1830. The letter is signed by the Surveyor General, J. S. Roe and relates to the grant of 'Fremantle allotment No. 101'. One of the earliest recorded W. A. covers carried by the P. O. , and of Exhibition quality. Very few pre-1840 W. A. letters have survived. An Important Page One for any W. A. Collection. [Ex Juhl.] PHOTO - ABOVE £500

M. Service' and without charges, having a very fine rare crowned boxed 'POST OFFICE/BUNBURY' mark on the front (creased but remarkably clear). Sent by James Knight who was Bunbury Postmaster from August 1841 and Tidemaster from Oct. 1841; he resigned in June 1844. Few examples of this Bunbury mark are known; a very early internal Postmaster's O.H.M.S. cover. [Ex Owen.] PHOTO – INSIDE BACK COVER £500

Rare thus. PHOTO – INSIDE BACK COVER £400
275 VERY EARLY INTERNAL 'Free' ENDORSEMENT WITH CROWNED 'GENERAL/POST OFFICE/PERTH' MARK ; Attractive c.1850 E from Perth to 'R. G. Meares Esq., Resident, York' with a fine strike of the crowned boxed 'GENERAL/POST OFFICE/PERTH' mark nicely placed on the front beside a bold 'Free' endorsement, signed 'R. H. Bland' (Acting Colonial Secretary in Perth from 1850) on the front (to authorise the franking privilege). The letter is undated, but the addressee (?) has written a poem on the blank inside page referring to the failed attempt (by the Irish nationalist William Hamilton) to assassinate Queen Victoria which took place on 19th May 1849 (news of which would have reached W. A. by 1850). The poem ('For my D[ear] Mary; her Papa's wild follies') also refers obliquely to the 1850 transformation of the Swan River Settlement into a penal colony:- '...The dire event, the last sad knell/Which toll'd Swan River's funeral ./ The Assassin did but give the Queen alarm/ For God preserved Her Majesty from harm ...' A very early poem written in W. A. and a very rare early 'Free' cover. PHOTO – INSIDE BACK COVER £500

279 UNIQUE PRINTED 'CONVICT LETTER, ESTABLISHMENT, WEST AUSTRALIA' COVER TOG.B. WITH OVAL 'POST OFFICE/(Crown)/FREMANTLE/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' MARK Fine 1st Dec. 1856 EL written on the specially printed 'Convict Establishment' letter-sheet with printed heading and internal rules page. Addressed to Burnley in England and signed on the front by 'Thomas H. Dixon' above the printed inscription 'Superintendent C. E. W. A.', and charged only '6' (British arrival Ship Letter charge), because internal Convicts' letters were carried free of internal postage. There is a nearly very fine oval 'POST OFFICE/(Crown)/FREMANTLE/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' mark also on the front. The letter is from Griffith Boyer who was convicted for manslaughter in 1854, and sentenced to 15 years transportation. The page of printed rules explain that convicts were only allowed to send one letter every 2 months, to receive only one letter every 2 months, and that all letters were censored. This is the only recorded example of this specially printed type of Convict's Letter from Western Australia. Very rare and an Important Exhibition Item. [Ex Patrick Pearson.] SEE ALSO COLOUR PHOTO – INSIDE FRONT COVER £5000
280 THE UNIQUE INTERNAL CONVICT'S LETTER - WITH THE VERY RARE FREMANTLE '(Crown)/FREE' MARK IN BLUE ; Attractive 8th/10th Sept. 1860 EL (ref. selling land for the convict to settle his debts; with internal printed page ref. the regulations for convicts' mail) to the Bishop at Perth (W. Lefroy, Superintendent' with a very fine blue '(Crown)/FREE' mark and black 'FREMANTLE/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' c.d.s. (error of spelling) nicely placed on the front. Only one other example (dated 17 years later!) of this 'FREE' mark has been recorded, making this a doubly rare cover. 281 FREMANTLE CERTIFICATE OF 'CONDITIONAL PARDON'; 5th Dec. 1862 printed 'CERTIFICATE' signed by the 'Resident Magistrate, Swan' stating that he thought William Lloyd a suitable person to be granted a conditional pardon (which he duly received on 31st Dec. 1862). 282 CONVICT'S LETTER TO G.B. FRANKED BY OFFICIAL PUNCH-HOLE 6d LILAC ; 4th Sept. 1868 E (somewhat grubby, small top flap & edge removed and other minor faults but with complete address panel & backstamps) addressed to Devon, franked by a 6d lilac with the Official perforation (4mm diameter) in the centre tied by a watery-brown '13' numeral (matching the partial 'MANDURAH' c.d.s. on the flap) and by part of the near fine 'PINJARRA' c.d.s. in a different black ink, with 9th Nov. 1868 'TIVERTON' arrival c.d.s. on the flap. The letter is written by W. H. Kerslake (convicted in 1863 at Exeter to 14 years penal servitude for rape) to his parents, mentioning his hopes for a ticket of leave (which he was granted in Nov. 1870). This seems to be an abuse of the use of these Official stamps which were provided for 'Imperial Service'; was the stamp stolen property Less than 10 punch-hole covers of W. A. have been recorded to date . Very rare. [Ex Chadwick.] PHOTO – INSIDE BACK COVER £1500
283 Similar circa Nov. 1869 E (address cut out) to Dudley (Worcs.; 8th Jan. 1870) redirected to Stourport (probable m/s '1' redirection charge cut away), franked by an Official punch-hole 6d lilac tied by a very fine Perth '2' numeral. The letter was sent by convict William Jones (sentenced in 1864 at Liverpool to 10 years penal servitude for uttering forged money) to an unidentified peer, seeking his help. In spite of the faults this a major rarity, being one of less than 10 recorded punch-hole covers. [Ex Patrick Pearson.] PHOTO - see plate no. 12 £200

310 THE VERY RARE 1d BLACK SWAN NEWSPAPER-RATE SINGLE FRANKING ON COMPLETE ISSUE OF THE W. A. 'GOVERNMENT GAZETTE' Remarkably fine complete 4-page 24th Aug. 1859 'EXTRA' issue of this Newspaper 'Printed at the Concit Establishment, Fremantle', franked by a 1d black 'Swan' (2 good to huge margins, cut into at foot and shaved at right) tied by a very fine Fremantle 15-bar '8' numeral. The paper is endorsed 'Trial of Staff Surgeon Rennie' (to which it relates exclusively) beside a partial red wax seal which clearly originally affixed the (now lost) address wrapper; it is likely that the paper was sent to England, given its fine state of preservation, and the fact that Peter discovered it in an English bookshop some years ago; it probably survived in the attic of some English solicitor who was familiar with the case. The very rare correct usage of the 1854 1d value for the overseas newspaper rate, which has never been offered on the philatelic market before. Fine Exhibition item. PHOTO - ABOVE £2000
