Clearly this was a 'Loose' Ship Letter and the stamp considered sufficient when it was handed in to the Melbourne P.O. by the ship's captain. This cover was carried by the European & Australian Royal Mail Co.'s chartered steamship the 'City of Sydney' to Suez, and then by the 'Teviot' from Alexandria to Southampton.
