| ** | 81 | FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR PERIOD BRINDISI ROUTE - UNIQUE (?) '1d' POSTAGE DUE MARKING ON COMPLETE PRINTED MATTER RATE WRAPPER TO G.B. | ||||||||||||
| The extraordinarily rare usage of the special Printed Matter Rate boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/DEFICIENT POSTAGE/1d' mark - a very fine strike - nicely placed on the front of a complete long 4th Nov. 1870 'Law Papers only' wrapper (minor faults and closed tears) to Surrey, franked by a NSW Diadem 6d blackish-violet tied by a fine 'SYDNEY/N.S.W.' duplex with large blue crayon '2' on the front (? an incorrect doubled arrival charge?), and a 26th Dec. 1870 'WEYBRIDGE STATION' arrival c.d.s. on the reverse. Sealed with a large blue wafer of 'G.L. WILSON/CONVEYANCER/SYDNEY N.S.W.' and carried by P&O Steamers Malta & Delhi. While the 'BRINDISI 3d' mark is of considerable rarity, we are not aware of any other example of this '1d' version of the same mark (which was applied at the London Foreign Branch only on re-routed newspaper/printed matter wrappers) having been recorded. George's favourite 'discovery' and a major Exhibition item for any Franco-Prussian War, Australian Mail or Postage Due collection. This letter was carried by P&O Steamers Geelong (to Galle) Mooltan (to Suez) & Nubia (to Brindisi). Very good example of this rare 3d mark on a letter that was in transit when the route and charges changed. PHOTO - see plate no. 6 | £700 | |||||||||||

Rare example of the short-lived extra 1d charge made for NSW letters to connect with the Ceylon-routed P&O service from 10th Feb. 1874 to 27th May 1875; this was the earliest 'Galle Penny' cover that George had recorded.
