838 VERY EARLY LETTER FROM COWES WITH REVERSED "N" LONDON BISHOP MARK; 31st Oct. 1674 EL (minor edge fraying at heading inside and short right-hand flap trimmed away) from "Coues on the Ile of Whit" (sic) to London charged "3"(d) having a very fine strike of the reversed "N" Bishop Mark of "NO/2" on the side flap; the exact same date as an example sold in Cavendish's "Barrie Jay" auction (in June 2000; lot2052). 849 KING'S LYNN - "LYNN REGIS" - RARE BANK CIRCULAR PRINTED WITHIN A MULREADY LETTER-SHEET; 15th March 1842 usage of the 1d Black Mulready EL from "LYNN" (fine c.d.s. and very fine black Maltese Cross - partly on Britannia) on the front, addressed to "HADLEIGH" (fine c.d.s. on front) in Suffolk; the contents are a partly printed letter from "[Lynn] Regis" (the first word is partly under the seal) instructing the addressees to "pay the amount of the inclosed, value £[63-17-0] to Messrs Prescott, Grote & Co., London, on our account", signed by Massey & Jarvis. 860 THE VERY RARE "I"-IN-CIRCLE MARK OF GUILDFORD - THE SUCCESSOR TO THE RARE "CHICHESTER" HOT-CROSS-BUN MARKS ; 25th Jan. "1686/7" [=1687] EL (slight dusting but fine and complete) from "Worplesdon" to London charged "2" (single rate for up to 80 miles), having a mostly very fine strike of this "I"-in-circle mark on the right flap, with a very fine "IA/26" London arrival Bishop mark on the left flap. Only 3 examples of this "I" mark of Guildford are known (see James Grimwood-Taylor's article in the May/June 200 "Cavendish Chronicle" - that illustrated this cover in colour - and the updated version in the subsequent "G.B. Journal" of the G.B.P.S.); they all come from 1686/7 only and all are from this "John Moore" correspondence. Fine example of one of Britain's earliest country P.O. marks; even rarer than the "Hot Cross Bun" marks (of which 10 examples are known). Important Exhibition item. PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £600

875 BANFF: 1787-1970 A fine County Postal History collection formed by a well-known postal historian from a neighbouring county. Covering the Post Offices of Banff-shire, good pre-stamp covers with straight line town names, local cancels, 1841 1d & 2d covers, railway letter & parcel bills, a superb Mulready from Banff redirected to Elgin with "To Pay 1d" in manuscript. Many cards and more modern items, Express, registered, etc. Two volumes are written-up in alphabetic order of Offices, there are also a quantity of loose covers and some pre-stamp/early stamped covers and a quantity of WWII Airgraphs (Addressed to Elgin) in a small box. We note a few Aberdeen items at the end of one album with three types of Aberdeen Paid or Paid at Aberdeen marks in red. A terrific chance to build an award winning collection of this small county. £440

885 THE VERY RARE HANDSTRUCK FOUR OF GOLSPIE (SUTHERLAND); Attractive 1st Jan. 1840 EL (turned inside out and re-used - prepaid 28th Dec. from Edinburgh to Golspie, and then unpaid back to Edinr.), having a superb strike of the black Handstruck "4" mark (a distinctive type with a cut at the top of the upright) nicely placed on the front, with a near fine red boxed "GOLSPIE" c.d.s. on the top flap. The inner attached sheet (slight stains) has a mostly very fine "PAID at EDINR." c.d.s. and a red MANUSCRIPT "4" marking). (11th Dec.) and a very fine black London "T·P/Rate/2 D " postage due charge alongside. The Hospital was entitled to free postage, but this did not cover local charges, so the local London 2d rate (to Chelsea) was still payable; the "Uniform" 4d rate was therefore reduced to a 2d charge.
