MILITARY - CAMPAIGN LETTER WITH THE "A[RMEE] B[RITANNIQUE]" IN CIRCLE MARK OF THE WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION; Attractive 25th July 1745 EL headed from "Saventheim Camp" (Belgium) and addressed to the "Earl of Lowdon....London", with a very fine strike of the first British Army marking - the "AB" in circle mark - nicely placed on the front, beside the "10" charge. The interesting contents give a graphic update on the French successes; "I am just come from Head Quarters....Oudenarde surrendered [to the French] yesterday...make no doubt of the Garrison's being Prisoners of War....the next place they attempt will be Dendermonde, which I believe is in no way able to make the least defence, the works being ruinous, & the place besides being destitute of a Garrison & Stores...When they are masters of Dendermonde this Camp will be something more subject to be disturbed [a P.S. notes that "The Head Q's are changed though the Camp is not "]...I am afraid that Brussels must be given up....7,000 Hessians are said to be marching to join us.. ." Excellent up-to-date eye-witness letter from this important Campaign. PHOTO - see plate no. 4 |

ROYALTY - "IMPOSSIBLE" 1841 FREE-FRANK FROM ONE ILLEGITIMATE SON OF WILLIAM IV TO ANOTHER; 26th March 1841 env. (part flaps lost) most oddly headed and countersigned for the franking privilege in "1839" (but clearly dated "1841" by 3 postmarks), signed by the Earl "Munster" (1794-1842; the eldest son of William IV and Mrs. Jordan) who may have suffered from schizophrenia and sadly committed suicide the year after this letter was sent; addressed to his brother (Lord Fitzclarence, 1802-56, the younger some of William IV and Mrs. Jordan) who was the commander of the Royal Yacht at this date. It seems that no-one had told the Earl of Munster that Free-franking had been abolished (or that 1839 had ended!); his secretary presumably prepaid the 2d postage, because there is a faint oval "PD2" of Brighton on the front and a London tombstone "PAID" transit d.s. Remarkable "impossible" free frank! PHOTO - see plate no. 17 |
