MANUSCRIPT-CANCELLED 3d-PAIR ON COVER TO ST.HELENA SENT VIA THE "ADMIRALTY" IN LONDON; July [1884] env. (from London) addressed to "Commander A.A.C. Parr, R.N., H.M.S. Frolic........Admiralty for address" and franked by a vertical pair of 3d dull lilacs tied by pencil squiggles, with no postal marks but presumably sent under cover to the Admiralty and then by official Admiralty Bag to the ship which (see p. copies of other covers from the correspondence included) was in St. Helena at this date. Perhaps someone at the Admiralty felt that the 4d postage (the correct rate to St. Helena at this time) was a proper payment for the official journey and so cancelled the stamps. Rare thus.
