155 JOHN LEECH's "FORES'S COMIC ENVELOPE No.1" CARICATURE LETTER-SHEET USED WITH COLOURED SHORTHAND-PROPAGANDA SEALS; 2nd Dec. 1843 usage of this famous and rare EL (minor faults & closed tears), "Post Paid" (with red "2" for cash prepayment on the front) from "ABINGDON" (c.d.s. on front) to "WALLINGFORD" (c.d.s. on lower flap); most exceptionally the letter has been sealed with three diamond-shaped Shorthand wafer seals (one green and two red) . Rare thus; we cannot recall having seen propaganda wafers of any kind used on a Mulready Caricature before. This is the latest date of only 12 recorded examples of this Caricature (according to Bodily/Jarvis/Hahn book). Exhibition item. PHOTO - see plate no. 2 £600

164 UNPLATED: The selection comprising eight off-paper examples, one on large piece and another on large part EL addressed to Eton College. Chiefly very presentable examples but only one with margins completely clear all round (cancelled by black MC). £300

189 PLATE 6, QL - THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE: 1840 (29th. June) EL from Edinburgh to Islay bearing a fine neatly cancelled plate 6 QL clearly dated 29th June 1840 being the earliest recorded date of use for this plate.
