JOHN LEECH's "FORES'S COMIC ENVELOPE No.1" CARICATURE LETTER-SHEET USED WITH COLOURED SHORTHAND-PROPAGANDA SEALS; 2nd Dec. 1843 usage of this famous and rare EL (minor faults & closed tears), "Post Paid" (with red "2" for cash prepayment on the front) from "ABINGDON" (c.d.s. on front) to "WALLINGFORD" (c.d.s. on lower flap); most exceptionally the letter has been sealed with three diamond-shaped Shorthand wafer seals (one green and two red) . Rare thus; we cannot recall having seen propaganda wafers of any kind used on a Mulready Caricature before. This is the latest date of only 12 recorded examples of this Caricature (according to Bodily/Jarvis/Hahn book). Exhibition item. PHOTO - see plate no. 2 |
