4006 FERNANDO PO/PORTUGUESE PRINCE's ISLAND LETTER TO G.B., ETC.; 6th/22nd Aug. 1853 letter (no env.; on "Island of St. Helena" embossed-heading paper) from Capt. (later Rear-Admiral) H.W. Bruce (see Ascension & Hong Kong sections above) to his daughter in England, headed "[H.M.S.] Pen[elope] at Fernando [Po]" but commenced on the obscure West African Portuguese "Prince's Island", giving his anti-Slavery Squadron's plans to visit "Lagos and Quittah; to Fernando and to meet the Teager with the Mails from Ascension off Magunha...I have been poking about on shore [at Prince's Island]...we are 8 weeks out of harbour...from St. Helena". Plus an undated letter (from Fernando Po) from this correspondence that appears to belong to its Feb./April 1855 env. sent privately to England and posted from London to Paris. (2 items). £100
4007 Similar 11th May [1855] letter (on embossed Crystal Palace "EXHIBITION" writing paper) from "[H.M.S.] Penelope, Fernando Po" with gruesome and interesting letter to Capt. Bruce's daughter in Paris from her new husband, J.R. Alexander, R.N., who was on her father's ship in the anti-Slavery Squadron, with "impossible" envelope (dated from Torquay 4th May 1855 but with the addressee's pencil annotation "Fernando Po; Woman's hands cut off") prepaid 4d to France. The letter was sent by the "Bloodhound....a bag is now to be left here for her" via Sierra Leone; "We leave at 1P.M. [for Ascension]...I have been thrice on shore here....I sent 36 pieces to be washed, as the women here get the clothes up very nicely...I saw a shocking sight this morning....a young woman....handless....those savages, the Boobies...punish the first case of adultery by cutting off one hand of both guilty parties; the second offence the other is removed....[she] must have been a very naughty creature." The 1835 reference to Norfolk Island pre dates any letters known by seven years and may be the earliest known reference to the Islands. It would repay further research. (2 covers). 4029 1676 DOCUMENT IN THE FORM OF AN ATTESTATION FOR THE EAST INDIA COMPANY signed by Gregory Field, Governor of St Helena 1674-78 concerning the behaviour of Captain Anthony Bealle who had 'grossly abused' the chaplain and two astronomers (Edmund Halley was on St Helena 1676-78); signed by Gregory Field and counter-signed by Wm Rutter and Jno Greentree.
