3619 FREE MAIL – THE UNIQUE () FANCY SCROLL “MEMBER/IN/IRELAND” MARK ON COVER; 29th May – 2nd June 1830 E (side-flaps removed) addressed to the “Earl of Mountcashel, Parliament House, London” from “COOTEHILL” (Co. Cavan; faint mileage mark on the front). The letter has been redirected to “Kilworth, Ireland” and the initial “1/4” charge cancelled with London “FREE” datestamps (morning & evening duties of 31st May) struck on the front, while there are fine red 29th May Dublin & 2nd June “WATERFORD” transit c.d.s.’s on the flaps. In addition there is a mostly very fine strike of the extremely rare red scroll-framed “MEMBER/IN/IRELAND” mark of London (Jay L836; apparently this is the only recorded example) nicely placed on the front. It would seem likely that this mark (first cousin to the Dublin “MEMBER NOT IN IRELAND” mark) may have been used exclusively on mail redirected from the Houses of Parliament. 3620 FREES - RARE DISINFECTED COVER EX MALTA ; 22nd/23rd Dec. 1839 (arrival dates) E (from Egypt) to London (addressed to the First Lord of the Admiralty who was entitled to unlimited overseas free mail) with faint but recognisable 2-ring "PURIFIEE AU LAZAREETE/MALTE" mark on the front beside two disinfection slits, having "LONDON" (Foreign Branch) and crowned "FREE" (General Post) c.d.s.'s on the flap & the front, dated during the Uniform Fourpenny Postage Period. 3642 POSTAGE DUES: 1843 EL (sent locally within Edinburgh) bearing 1d red (gum stains - not tied but apparently belongs) endorsed "Stamp Previously Used" & with handstamped "2", all subsequently crossed out! Presumably the charge was queried as the stamp was glued on but not previously cancelled. Most unusual. Also a few other pieces inc. large piece with scarce "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/d3/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/DEFICIENT POSTAGE". [Ex Willcocks]. PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £120
3643 POSTAGE DUE COVER - DISALLOWED NEWSPAPER WRAPPER (EX ASCENSION) WITH WAX BAG-SEAL ENDORSED "WRITING & MARKS WITHIN" AND SO CHARGED 1/- POSTAGE; Fine 1853 open-ended wrapper (probably from Ascension; with p. copies identifying the sender by his hand-writing; he was with an anti-slaving Squadron based at Ascension at this date - see lots under Ascension above) to London (redirected to Biggar), with a very fine yellow-orange "PACKET LETTER/DEVONPORT" (Rob.P2; late usage and not recorded in this colour) on the front, but apparently not charged until arrival in Scotland where a red wax "BIGGAR/(crown)/P.O" Bagseal was applied to the reverse (75% remaining), and "writing & marks within 1/-" written on the front. 3645 PROPAGANDA MATERIAL: THE "MRS. ROBERTS/MRS. MANSFIELD" ENVELOPE; c.1844 small unused env. with uncancelled 1d red (3 huge margins but just shaved at the foot and scissors cut at bottom right corner) and printed address "Mrs. Edward Roberts,/or,/Mrs. G. Mansfield,/TROWBRIDGE,/ Wiltshire." with additional printed inscription at top "To Postmasters:-/An immediate answer to this Letter expected:/Any delay will be enquired into." Presumably this env. was produced as a direct result of the anti-Graham campaign and the attendant revelations about the detaining and opening of mail in the Post Office's Secret Office. (faults & creases; Inspectorate flap) with "HOME OFFICE" imprint endorsed "Train letter" addressed to "Hadfield Railway Station till called for" with "GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY" 2d green (faults but tied by v. fine oval "ASHTON P.P." oval d.s.) and 1d lilac (tied by pencil cross).
