Bruce (later Rear-Admiral; see Hong Kong section for the 1840's letters from this correspondence) to his daughter back in England, clearly sent under cover to London, posted there (presumably via a friend in the Admiralty) with "Charing Cross/2D PAID" and then redirected to Devon with "Pimlico/2D PAID". The writer was in charge of an anti-slaving Squadron along the West Coast of Africa. The contents refer to emergency medical aid for the "Eliza" en route from India to G.B., the addressee's future husband - J.R. Alexander [see next two lots] - who was also on board the "Penelope", sending a ship to "St. Helena", "I do not think...they will remove me from this station until my term of 3 years has expired", "I landed at the Cone today", "I send this by the Tudor - passenger ship - just come in from the Cape", etc. With a newspaper cutting about laudanum use glued inside. Rare and interesting early letter. £150

One with no sign of place of origin but arriving in London (with v. fine blue boxed "DEAL/SHIP LETTER" on the front) on 28th June 1852 and so clearly from Ascension where he was at that time (see previous lot); the other (some tears) is endorsed "Ascension June 14th" (with "J.R.A." initials) and has a partial oval "SHIP AND INSTRUMENT [MAKER]/LONDON" Forwarding Agent's cachet on the front, plus London and Torquay (26th/27th July 1852) datestamps on the back, but no prepayment or charge! (no charge) or Official "PAID" c.d.s., which presumably once carried letters from Capt. Bruce in Ascension or in W. African waters. Good reading incl.; "On the late [i.e. recent] presents being received by the King of Dahomey, he was much pleased; he desired his Messenger to take the Admiral's stick back to him, and say that he would give up human sacrifices altogether, and always be friends with the English. When you see Lord Palmerston, tell him this..." Plus some ribald naval & other jokes, e.g.; "Which of His animals did Noah see the least of on the Ark.....His Ass!
