PLANTAGENET" TO LORD WELLINGTON IN THE FIELD IN SPAIN; 18th March 1813 "Private" letter (no wrapper) from "Charles Doyle" (1770-1842, Director of Military Instruction for the British Army and famous Spanish campaigner; see D.N.B. entry) on board ship "off the Mouth of the Tagus" in transit from England back to join Wellington in the field, regarding the unfortunate speed with which some new recruits were being sent into action with insufficient training. A rare insight into the mechanics of the Peninsular Campaign at the highest level. £100
3106 MILITARY - PORTUGUESE "MIGUELITE WARS" CAMPAIGN COVER; 27th July 1833 EL (some light toning affects address) to Birmingham charged "7/6" with red "Overcharge" annotation, having a very fine undated green Falmouth "LISBON/F" mark on the top flap. The contents inc.; "The people here rose as one head & considering all things, but very few people have been killed...thousands are now running to fight under his [Don Pedro's] flag....The shops were open today for the first time..." Rare eye-witness references to the 1828-34 Wars in which England & France intervened to restore Maria to the throne. £100
3107 MILITARY - SPANISH "CARLIST WAR" CAMPAIGN COVERS; 26th Oct. 1836 EL from "Bayonne" to GB (redirected on arrival) with d.s.'s & postal rates. The contents include details of Gomez's Army of 7,000 men being defeated a few days before by General Allis, who took 1,394 Prisoners; Gomez was en route to Madrid. Also; "the Carlists have experienced a defeat in Catalonia. As to the Legion, all is right - on Saturday 15,000 were forwarded, 10,000 yesterday..." Plus 17th Oct. 1838 EL from "S.SEBASTIEN" (red oval) to GB incl.; "Last night an ambuscade was laid for one of our advance patrols....the Carlists concealed themselves under a breastwork from which their fire was aimed with fatal precision; the Sergt. & one man killed...they stripped the bodies and made off with the booty..." Rare newsy letters from this campaign. (2 covers). £150

3109 MILITARY - INDIAN MUTINY LETTER; 29th Sept. 1857 stampless EL (flap fault just affects top of address panel) from "Suhampore" to Ireland with boxed "TOO LATE" & "INDIA UNPAID", with good contents; "Here I am on my way to Delhi; the city was assaulted on the 14th and it took till the 20th to capture the whole of it; on the 14th the Fuziliers and 75th Foot got drunk...the natives had put out all kinds of liquors to tempt them, the bait took and very drunk they did get...There were so many Officers wounded at Delhi, that all on leave in the North West Provinces have been ordered to join at Delhi, so we are on our way there via Meerut...About 12 Officers have died during the Assault on Delhi and about 60 wounded, and 1100 men killed & wounded...Numbers of the Mutineers were killed; a great number escaped...A Force was to be at Lucknow by the 25th under Havelock, as it could hold out after that date...We have had no letters or papers from home for some time, as the Daks [P.O. messengers] have been plundered below Lahore...Upwards of 300 guns were taken [at Delhi], but no Europeans rescued; they may have been taken to Gwalior as hostages." 3111 MILITARY - SUDAN/INDIA: 1885 (23 Jan.) env. from Dongola to Camborne with m/s "From 2221 pte E Smith/18th Hussars Light Camel Regt" countersigned by the commanding officer. The env. is franked with a 1d lilac tied by "F" in oval of bars. Creased and one flap missing. Also another env. from the same correspondence. Damaged. c1890 Indian Soldiers & Seamen's env. uprated and used from Private Moore of the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles to Ireland. Soiled. £60

The cancellations are predominantly "Dumb" Machine types amongst which we notice a cover to Brighton bearing a defective 1d red tied by a scarce mute machine cancellation (from a study of the bar length it is believed to originate from a Krag machine used in Liverpool - the base port of the Northern patrol) with the date/town/time die substituted with a large X die slug for security purposes. 3124 MILITARY - WWI: 1919 cover from the naval Transport Office, Venice, authenticated by Lieutenant H. W. Taylor, R.N.V.R., to a merchant in Massa bearing the Massa-Seziori Riunite receiving mark on reverse and a fine example of the oval "R.R. POSTE/NAVAL/TRANSPORT OFFICE/VENEZIA" cachet in blue on obverse. Also a cover from a German POW incarcerated in H.M.S. "Foerina", a prison ship moored off Southend, with circular red "POST FREE/P.C./PRISONERS OF WAR" cachet. The cover contains a letter from Reservist W.
