1104 FANNING ISLAND: REMARKABLE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS COMPILED BY GEORGE GUISLEY, EMPLOYEE OF THE PACIFIC CABLE BOARD & A MEMBER OF THE FANNING ISLAND VOLUNTEER RESERVE DURING WORLD WAR ONE (1913-1918) fine range of photos, neatly pasted in place and captioned in a leather bound volume, 58pp. 7"x 12". Including some 120 views of Fanning Island, the cable station built in 1902, the men who worked there, the members of the Royal Navy garrison and the F.I.V.R., the native inhabitants, the collection of the mail, the German cruiser 'Nürnberg' which raided the island in Nov. 1914, the German forces during their brief occupation, the destruction caused by the Germans to the cable station, the wreck of the Pacific Cable Board's schooner 'Strathcona', etc., etc. Also containing some 70 additional photos recording Guisley's visit to Honolulu, plus a few personal photos. The photographs are of varying size, some have postcard backs and are mostly of good quality. An exceptional and possibly unique photographic record of life on the small Pacific island during wartime and its most turbulent episode. Only three months after the German raid, the 'Nürnberg' was sunk in the Battle of the Falklands, with 7 survivors from a complement of 295 men. *** £500

1106 MEMENTOS OF THE GREAT WAR (1914) two items: a) family 'In Memoriam' card, depicting Christ on the battlefield comforting a dying soldier. Finely colour printed design 8"x 51/2", with calligraphic details of Gunner Marsh of the 'L' Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery. The Battery, covering the British retreat from Mons, was surprised by German cavalry on 1st Sept. 1914 and lost 23 killed and 31 wounded. Marsh died from his wounds two days later. A famous episode, which resulted in the award of 3 Victoria Crosses. b) "Souvenir of the Great War", attractive, colour printed cotton banner 19"x 24", depicting engraved portraits of 28 leaders of the 'Entente' powers including Kitchener, Churchill, George V, Tsar Nicholas, Botha, the Mikado, Poincaré, etc., surrounded by flags, battle scenes, airship, battleships, etc. *** CLICK FOR PHOTOGRAPH £50
1107 REAL PHOTO PICTURE POSTCARD OF THE (MOTORISED) "DISPATCH CARRIER TO 25th (C of L) CYCLIST IN THE LONDON REGT" (c.1914) superb, close-up view of the uniformed driver in an sporty, solid tyred, one-seater 'GWK' motor car inscribed "O.H.M.S." on the bonnet, parked alongside a (London?) park. Plus, a similar card depicting a long line of recruits in civilian clothing, standing with their bicycles in a park. 1108 PRINCESS MARY'S CHRISTMAS BOX FOR SOLDIERS AND SAILORS (1914) attractive, embossed 'brass' box, bearing portrait of the only daughter of George V. Containing some 16 original cigarettes, their printed wrapper, portrait card and examples of the Princess's personal greetings cards for both 1914 and 1915. It is unusual to find a box with its original contents! Also included is a similar box (minus contents) sent to South African troops in 1945. *** £40
1109 1914 RECRUITMENT LETTER: Printed letter (2pp) which accompanied the December 1914 Householder's Return of volunteer service, 'signed' by Asquith & Bonar-Law - ''Every man...who is eligible will ask his own conscience whether ...it is not his duty to hold himself ready to enlist in the forces of the Crown.'' ** 1110 ANTI-BRITISH PROPAGANDA POSTCARD: 1914 PPC with b&w drawing of The Battle on the Suez, with symbolic scenes of previous defeats suffered by the British in Egypt, Turkey, India & Transvaal. The British are depicted as trying to cross a German defended Suez Canal. V. slight damage to top edge. **/*** £24
1111 PERSONAL COLLECTION OF REAL PHOTO PICTURE POSTCARDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS, COMPILED BY ARTHUR FIELDING, PIONEER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CATERPILLAR TRACTION ENGINE AND ARMOURED 'TANK' (1905-15) comprising six postcards and ten photographs all depicting close-up views of 'caterpillars', plus a descriptive, newspaper article and a 1966 letter of thanks from the Royal Armoured Corps Tank Museum at Bovington, thanking Mr. Fielding for their loan. Several of the photos and postcards were taken by Fielding himself and some bear his signature or initials on the negative.Two postcards bear signed messages on the reverse, one posted by him in 1915 from 52 Coy. MTASC Depot, Caterpillar Section, Aldershot. One shows Sergeant Fielding driving a caterpillar traction engine at Aldershot in 1915 and another, the specially designed caterpillar for use in the Klondyke in 1908. Fielding first worked at the traction engine works of Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham and later became senior test engineer with Messrs Ruston & Hornsby of London. A small but important collection, providing fascinating background to the development of the vehicle, which was to revolutionise 20th century warfare. Sailing up the Suez is a Turkish warship and in the top left is a picture of Envar Pascha, the Minister for War alongside a coloured Turkish Flag. An attractive PPC. *** £20
1122 EGYPTIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN PALESTINE: TRENCH MAPS PREPARED BY THE 7th FIELD SURVEY COY, ROYAL ENGINEERS (Aug. 1917 - Sept. 1918) eight lithographed, coloured maps, compiled from survey and aircraft photographs. Printed by the Survey of Egypt on linen backed, folding sheets 29"x 20". Three sheets (Azzun, Huj & Yehudiyeh) are on a scale 1:20,000 and five sheets (Beersheba, Samaria, Telfit, Tireh & Tul Keram) are on a scale 1:40,000. Detailed maps depicting towns, settlements, roads, waterways, railways, contours, enemy trenches, barbed wire and gun emplacements, destroyed bridges, etc. Such maps from the Palestine campaign are very elusive. **/*** £200

1130 ENGLISH LANGUAGE, AERIAL PROPAGANDA LEAFLETS DISSEMINATED BY THE GERMANS OVER BRITISH & AMERICAN TROOPS ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1918) three folded examples, carried by aircraft or balloon: a) "The American Peril", 9"x 6" warning British troops that the U.S.A. is seeking world domination. b) "Peace in sight at last", 9"x 6" calling for peace negotiations to start before the winter. c) "The Austro-Hungarian Peace Note", 13"x 9" appealing for the Entente leaders to respond to the Central Powers proposals for ending the bloodshed. 1132 MESOPOTAMIAN CAMPAIGN: "THE BAGHDAD TIMES" (1918) twenty eight of the first 29 issues of the daily newspaper, issued for the information of British forces, each 4pp. 18"x 11". Printed at the Government Press, Baghdad. Issue no. 1 (1 Jan. 1918) has been folded and addressed to Wood Green, London, inscribed in manuscript "On Active Service" and "Newspapers Only. No Corres." and postmarked "F.P.O. No. 361", dated 2 Jan. 1918. The remaining issues bear no postal markings. The newspapers contain worldwide news, primarily concerning the progress of WWI. British troops had entered Baghdad on 11 March 1917. **/*** £80
1133 "WAR SAVINGS PICTURES": FIRST & SECOND SERIES (c.1918) 12 different sheets, each containing 20 different, coloured pictorial labels, issued as an incentive for children to buy War Savings Stamps: a) "Naval" set of 60 labels issued in 3 rouletted sheets. b) "Medals" set of 60 labels issued in 3 rouletted sheets. c) "War in the Air" set of 60 labels issued in 3 perforated sheets. d) "Womens War Work" set of 60 issued in 3 perforated sheets. All are ungummed. The labels were distributed to Savings Group secretaries in booklets, each containing ten sheets. One label was given away free for each war savings stamp purchased. 1146 WINTERHILFSWERK DES DEUTSCHEN VOLKES (1930's - 1940's) collection of some 66 lapel 'badges' sold by Nazi charitable organisations, such as the WHW. Made of metal, plastic, wood or glass and including two miniature propaganda booklets. Depicting a wide variety of Nazi and Aryan symbols, miniature figures and weapons, folk heroes, etc. Sold in the streets and beer cellars by uniformed SA men and Hitlerjugend. Failure to buy could bring public humiliation and threats of violence. Collection compiled by a British Army intelligence officer serving in post-war Germany & Austria. *** £100
1147 GERMAN GENERAL STAFF 'INVASION' MAPS OF BRITAIN (1939-1941) six maps: no. 15 "Aberdeen"; no. 22 "Worcester"; no. 35 "Cornwall"; no. 39 "Brighton"; no. 40 "Dover"; no. 68 "Firth of Forth". Prepared by the Wehrmacht on a scale of 1cm. to 1 km. (except no. 68 which is 2cms. to 1km.). Based on the 1" to 1 mile Ordnance Survey maps of Great Britain and colour printed on folding sheets, each approx. 30"x 50". All place names are in English but the marginal text is in German and the key is bi-lingual. Also included is an example of the original, linen-backed O.S. sheet (26"x 40") prepared for the British War Office in 1940, which was used as the basis for the Wehrmacht sheet no. 68 "Firth of Forth". EASEY, SERVING IN CANADA & ENGLAND (1943-1946) leather bound volume 9"x 8" containing a 180pp. detailed manuscript record of his training as a flying instructor at R.A.F. Flying Training Schools in Calgary, Alberta, and Kingston, Ontario and at various R.A.F. bases in England. Plus, some 26pp. recording his service 1951-1952 as a member of the R.A.F. Reserve. Also included are some 16 tipped-in photos of fellow servicemen and a number of certificates confirming his completion of various flying courses. These official plans, which would have been top secret at the time, are each approx. 10"x 9" and most are signed and dated by the draughtsmen responsible. The components were being manufactured for aircraft produced by Fairey Aviation (Barracuda); Gloster Aircraft (Meteor); Hawker Aircraft (Hurricane, Typhoon & Sea Fury); Napier & Sons (Tempest); A.V. Roe (Lancaster) and Vickers Armstrong Supermarine (Seafire, Spitfire, Warwick & Wellington). Four of the plans depict Spitfire and four, Hawker Hurricane components. **** £100

Photographically produced, restricted circulation report, comprising 10pp. 9"x 16" with typescript description, side elevation, front and rear views, sections, plan and three-dimensional drawings of components. The illustrations are of a high standard. Pressed Steel were major manufacturers of components for military vehicles and were obviously delighted to be able to examine and report on the captured German vehicle. Plus, a collection of 72 original plate photographs (12 of them mounted in special exhibition album) depicting components for aircraft, military vehicles, artillery, mines, bombs & torpedoes made by the company with 15 original, scale drawings (1937-1945). **/*** £100

1171 BRITISH SECOND ARMY: THE MAAS BRIDGES (1945) collection of 19 original plate photographs, each approx. 6"x 9", depicting prefabricated bridges over the River Maas close to the Dutch-German border, some with military vehicles crossing. The 7 bridges were constructed by the 2nd. Army in Jan. - Feb. 1945, following the failure of the Arnhem Airdrop in Sept. 1944. Eight photos are aerial and eleven are surface. Many have typescript captions on the reverse and were issued for internal distribution by the Chief Engineer's Branch of General Dempsey's 2nd. Army, in April 1945. *** £60
