GREAT BRITAIN - CORONATION AERIAL POST
THE RARE TRIO FROM THE SECOND FLIGHT OF LETTER BILLS FOR BAGS 1A & 2A PLUS THE LABEL FROM BAG 2A: The Letter Bills bear die "5" cancellations, "WINDSOR" double-ring c.d.s. and the initials of both Postal Officers whilst the bag label refers to a weight of 261/2lbs. The Letter Bills are dated "SP 9" as it was expected that they would have been flown then but, in the event, strong winds prevented the flight which was delayed until the 11th. A remarkable trio. *** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £380
THE WAY BILL FOR THE FIRST FLIGHT signed by G.W.Hamel (Aviator), H.G.Clift (Despatching Officer) and S.(?) J.Jackson (Postal Receiving Officer) and bearing a very fine die "5" cancellation. This Way Bill is for Bag No.1weighing 231/2lbs.and is dated "Sat the 9th day of September 1911." The first flight was piloted by Gustav Hamel in his Bleriot No. 1 machine and carried the violet, "privileged" mail plus one copy of each London newspaper in Bag No. 1. Specially prepared duplicate Way Bills were sent on each flight and each was signed by 3 officials; the Postal Receiving Officer kept the original and handed the duplicate back to the pilot. Hamel left London at 4.58p.m. and landed in Windsor at 5.13p.m with the mail reaching Windsor P.O. at 5.33p.m. The duplicate of this Way Bill is illustrated on p.55 of 'Coronation Aerial Post' by Baldwin. *** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £360
LETTER BILL OF THE FIRST FLIGHT signed by S.A.Roberts (Postmaster in charge of the London-Windsor mails) with die "1" cancellation and Windsor c.d.s. for 5.45p.m. The reverse, however, is endorsed 5.33p.m. and is initialled "JJ" (i.e. J.Jackson, the Postal Receiving Officer). The former time is probably when the bag was cleared ready for the mail to be despatched on the 6.00p.m. train to London. A very rare item. (The bag label from this flight was presented to H.M.King George V and remains in the Royal Collection). *** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £300
THE LETTER BILL & BAG LABEL FOR BAG NO. 3 CARRIED ON THE SECOND FLIGHT, the former with die "1" cancellation and Windsor c.d.s., signed by S.A.Roberts (the Despatching Officer) and initialled "AD" by the Receiving Officer on arrival, whilst the bag label confirms a weight of 261/2lbs. *** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £280
LETTER BILL AND BAG LABEL FOR BAG NO. 5 CARRIED ON THE THIRD FLIGHT, the former with die "1" cancellation and "WINDSOR" c.d.s. and initialled "SAR" and "AD" whilst the bag label shows a weight of 261/2lbs. The bag arrived at Windsor at 7 a.m. but the c.d.s. is timed "10 AM"; it appears that the P.O. staff cleared the bags in numerical order which explains the delay as Driver had arrived with 4 bags at almost exactly the same time. *** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £280
LETTER BILL AND BAG LABEL FOR BAG NO. 9 CARRIED ON THE SIXTH FLIGHT cancelled as in last lot and signed by S.A.Roberts (Despatching Officer) and initialled by the Receiving Officer, whilst the bag label shows a weight of 261/2lbs. ** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £280

Also a print of the photograph of the arrival of the first flown letter at Windsor. *** PHOTO - see plate no. 5 £220
WAY BILLS FOR BAGS 4 & 5 CARRIED ON THE THIRD FLIGHT: each bag weighed 261/2lbs and the Way Bill is signed by Clement Greswell (Aviator), H.E.Kelham (Despatching Officer) and A.Denyes (Receiving Officer) and bears a die "5" c.d.s. with m/s "11". This was the first flight made by Greswell (who, as senior pilot, should have made the first flight) and he used the Bleriot No.1which had been used by Gustav Hamel for the first flight; the Bleriot was much faster than Driver's Farman and arrived 5 mins. earlier than the second flight. *** £220
THE LETTER BILL AND BAG LABEL FOR BAG NO. 7 CARRIED ON THE FOURTH FLIGHT, the former bearing die "5" cancellation and "WINDSOR" c.d.s. and signed by S.A.Roberts (Despatching Officer) and initialled by the Receiving Officer; the corresponding bag label is somewhat soiled. **/*** PHOTO - plate no. 5 £220
