PROCLAMATION OF THE DEATH OF KING GEORGE II AND THE ACCESSION OF KING GEORGE III (1760) full text in complete issue of 'The Western Flying Post or, Sherborne & Yeovil Mercury' of Monday 27 Oct. 1760. One of the outstanding provincial newspapers of its day, the 'Mercury' employed a special messenger to intercept the London post before it reached Sherborne and bring the news post-haste. George II had died on 25 Oct. and printing of the newspaper was delayed to allow insertion of the dramatic news. Plus, complete issue of 'The Evening Post' of 31 July 1714 reporting Queen Anne's illness, to which a contemporary correspondent has added in manuscript (marginally guillotined), the news of her death on the following day. *** |
